Focusing on the global economic and trade pattern to discuss the way of shipping strain, the "North Bund International Maritime Forum" debuted in Shanghai

On the afternoon of November 4, the first "North Bund International Maritime Transport Forum" with the theme of "Under the Global Economic and Trade Changes: Changes and Responses to Shipping" was held. 150 representatives of the international shipping industry and all parties in the industrial chain attended the on-site event.

Globalization and anti-globalization coexist, trade friction uncertainty increases, and China's economy takes the lead in recovering from the epidemic, becoming an important engine for global economic recovery and growth. Gu Jinshan, secretary of the party committee and chairman of SIPG, believes that in the face of new changes in global economy and trade, port enterprises need to improve the efficiency of terminal operations and compress the loading and unloading time of ships in port through facility upgrading and smart port construction.

Secondly, it is necessary to upgrade the data connection, "gather points into chains, group chains into a network" in relevant data, and jointly create a "digital port" to compress the non-loading and unloading operation time of ships in port.

Third, we must deepen cooperation, form a reasonable division of labor layout between hub ports and feeder ports, rationally use trunk and regional ships, and improve the efficiency of ship utilization.

Under the epidemic, the traditional shipping cycle has been interrupted, a new cycle is brewing, and "certain uncertainty" has become a buzzword. Wan Min, chairman of COSCO SHIPPING and secretary of the party group, believes that the long-term trend of the shipping market will depend on the changes in the following three relationships.

The first is the trade pattern, focusing on the changes in globalization and regionalization. From the perspective of maritime demand, the growth of long-distance container shipping demand reflecting globalization has accelerated, and in 2020 and 2021, the growth rate of east-west trunk trade is 0.1 and 1 percentage point higher than that of intra-Asian routes, respectively. This shows that globalization is still the trend of the times, and it also shows that regionalization and globalization are not contradictory, and the development of regionalization will not only enhance the level of cooperation and industrial competitiveness in the region, but also help the deepening of globalization.

The second is digital transformation, focusing on changes between internal and external drivers. With the continuous deepening of digitalization and the significant improvement of customer demand standards, enterprises need to extend the resource chain and integrate more external nodes to create a full-process solution capability.

The third is green environmental protection, focusing on local improvement and in-depth innovation. In the past, green shipping focused more on single issues and prominent problems, but with the further strengthening of goals such as global economic decarbonization, the environmental protection requirements of shipping have also been further broadened and deepened, not only including the shipping industry, but also involving manufacturing, energy and other aspects. Therefore, as a shipping and related node, we should carry out comprehensive planning as soon as possible, focusing on the development of new fields, the development of new technologies, and the exploration of new energy.

Praten, secretary general of the International Shipping Association, is mainly concerned with the climate crisis and the transformation needed by the global shipping industry. He said there are already some promising zero-emission ship technologies, but there is still a long way to go to achieve zero emissions, and the global shipping community needs to increase investment. Investment in zero-emission technologies has now declined, which is a red flag. Hopefully, in the future, a public fund will be able to increase its investment in technology.

The forum is one of the parallel forums of the first North Bund International Shipping Forum, hosted by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport, and hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, the Shanghai Hongkou District People's Government, COSCO SHIPPING Group and SIPG Group.

The three major reports released at the forum, "Shipping Low-carbon Development Outlook 2021", "Global Shipping Prosperity Index" and the pre-release of the "World-class Port Comprehensive Evaluation Report (2021)" became one of the highlights of the conference.

The three achievements reflect the judgment of the trend of low-carbon development of the international shipping industry, the assessment of the production and operation status of global shipping enterprises, and the objective and fair comprehensive evaluation of world-class ports. At the same time, these three reports are also the latest research results of China Classification Society, Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai International Shipping Research Center, China Economic Information Society, and the Water Transport Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport.
