Do you want to go to the theater to see the French goddess performing Rodin's lover, or do you want to meet the Thai Romeo and Juliet for a while; do you want to witness the perfect restoration of Kubrick, or do you choose to sit for 7 hours in a row for a long movie experience that only can be found at film festivals; or are these not multiple choice questions?
After the announcement of many heavyweight blockbusters, the last four films of the 4K restoration unit have once again hit hard, or will become a must in the list of many fans.

An epic blockbuster of God Kubrick
The film depicts an uprising by slaves from the ancient Roman school of Gapuia fighting under spartacus in 73 BC against The tyranny of Rome. The slave revolt intensified the contradictions between the aristocratic and the commoners, and also shocked the ruling clique. The various forces competed and fought each other, and eventually the Spartacus rebel army was suppressed, tens of thousands of slaves were killed, and Spartacus was crucified alive.
This costume epic blockbuster, bringing together Kirk Douglas, Lawrence Oliver, Jane Simmons and other all-star casts, filmed Spartacus's deeds of leading slaves against tyranny, and won four awards such as the Oscar for Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor.
Although the film is regarded as a classic, Kubrick once refused to admit that it was his work. The film's original director, Anthony Mann, was removed after only one week of filming due to a conflict with the lead actor Kirk Douglas, and Kubrick completed the filming on the verge of danger. But as a product of the typical Hollywood studio model, Spartacus cost 12 million US dollars, shot for a total of 167 days, and because of the more than 10,000 people involved in the shooting, Kubrick could not fully control the whole scene, and became a very special part of the film master's sequence.
In 2015, Robert Harris, the great god of restoration who has repaired films such as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "The Godfather", performed a 6k scan and 4k restoration of the original negative of this film, and the restored version was extremely stunning, becoming an iconic masterpiece of Universal's film restoration.

A once-in-a-lifetime movie experience
The greatest work of the Hungarian film maestro Bella Tarr, based on the book-winning novel of the same name by the Booker Prize-winning Krasnahokai, depicts the demise of a collective farm in twelve chapters similar to the six steps before and after the tango. The film is 7 and a half hours long, composed of more than 150 long shots, a complex story, a weakened storyline, and a depressing black and white tone, which sets the tone of the film's darkness and despair. Renowned art critic Susan Sontag once commented on the film: "Every minute is fascinating, and I would like to re-watch it once a year in my lifetime."
In 2019, in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film's release, the Hungarian Film Restoration Laboratory and Abelos Pictures jointly restored the film. The original 12-kilometer-long, 104-kilogram negative was scanned and repaired by 4k, and Bella Tarr personally supervised the final grading of the film. The 4k restoration has its world premiere at this year's Berlin Film Festival, and this screening at the Shanghai International Film Festival is the second time the new restoration has been unveiled worldwide. Although we can't replay the film once a year, such a once-in-a-lifetime movie experience is worth experiencing for fans.

Thai classic pure love film
Based on the novel of the same name, it tells the tragic story of a pair of lovers in rural Thailand in 1936. The lovers of the green plum bamboo horse are separated by the woman's parents because the door is not right, and the hero and heroine who are privately determined to live forever have been separated from each other since then. Director Tse Song Siri carried the concept of "pushing Thai national culture to the world" when filming preparations, and the popular drama story structure of this film is roughly similar to the "Romeo and Juliet" familiar to Western audiences, coupled with the Thai-style interlude and beautiful rice field scenery, after the release, it earned enough tears from the audience, not only set a record in Thailand, but also won the Best Film Award at the Nantes Three Continents Film Festival in 1981, and was shortlisted for the "360 World Classic Films" selected by "Sight and Hear" magazine in 1998. Two remakes were also produced in 2002 and 2014.
In 2018, the Thai Film Archive collaborated with the Bologna Film Restoration Institute to carry out a new 4K restoration of the film.

The French film goddess plays Rodin's lover
One of the masterpieces of the French film goddess Isabelle Adjani, it tells the story of the entanglement of artistic creation and love between the world-famous sculptor Rodin and his lover Camille Claudel. In addition to starring in Camille, Adjani also served as the film's producer, playing Rodin by the French big-nosed film emperor Gérard dePardieu, and the fierce and tender, delicate and wild rivalry between the two is the biggest attraction of this film. Adjani was nominated for the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 1989 Berlin Film Festival, the César Award for Best Actress and the Academy Award for Best Actress.
In April 2019, a new 4k digital restoration of the film was released in France, and this screening at the Shanghai International Film Festival was the international debut of this restored version outside of France.
