Fragments of Zhu Kezhen's diary

The scope of Zhu Kezhen's diary is amazing!

Weather and phenology, state affairs, guests, letters, etc., are all-encompassing, not only related to the fields of science and education, but also record the activities of all sectors of society in which they are widely involved.

In addition to meteorology and geography, mathematical astronomy, geological biology, international politics, Chinese and foreign history, philosophical masterpieces, popular novels, poetry and songs, and natural museums are all involved.

Even more stunning records occur in 1961, when Zhu Kezhen visited Aba in Sichuan Province.

From Aba to Miaro, every place you go to, when you arrive, how many kilometers you have walked, and how much altitude you have traveled, are well documented. On this record sheet, he departed from Aba at 7:50 and arrived in Miaro at 18:06, driving 244 kilometers at an altitude of between 2,700 and 4,040 meters, leaving a record of 23 locations on the way.

The original manuscript of the diary was scrawled, as he sat in a jeep, driving on a rough road, holding an altimeter and looking at the current altitude; while staring at the milestones on the side of the road, noting the distance traveled, but also paying attention to what place he had arrived, from morning to night, in great detail. This year, he was 71 years old.

Zhu Kezhen recorded the weather and phenology in his diary, which was a "mandatory action" in his daily diary.

How the weather was, how the temperature was, what the humidity was, when the peach trees bloomed, the willows grew green leaves, and the swallows flew from the north, he recorded in his diary.

As a meteorologist, it's not just his diary, it's also the source of data for his research.

Scientific spirit

In 1935, Zhu Kezhen presided over the 20th annual meeting of the Chinese Science Society in Nanning and gave a speech entitled "Interests and Wrongs".

What is the air to cultivate science? It is the "scientific spirit". What is the scientific spirit? The spirit of science is to "only ask right and wrong without regard to the stakes." That is to say, only the search for the truth, regardless of personal interests, with this scientific spirit, can only have the existence of science.

- Zhu Kezhen

He pointed out that in order to let advanced science and technology take root and blossom in China, we should first cultivate a scientific spirit of "only asking right and wrong, regardless of interests."

The year after this speech, the 46-year-old Zhu Kezhen was appointed president of Zhejiang University, and "Qiushi" was formulated as the school motto.

"The path of seeking truth, the "Zhongyong" says it best, is 'erudition, interrogation, prudence, discernment, and perseverance', and it is not enough for erudition alone to interrogate, but it must be thoughtful, self-determined, and single-minded to study right and wrong. Being able to understand right and wrong in one's heart, and then doing one's best to do it, Zhuge Wuhou's so-called 'bow down to exhaustion, die and then die', success or failure is blunt, not to be reversed."

In 1941, in The Spirit and Methods of Science, Zhu Kezhen more clearly emphasized:

"To promote science is not only to know the scientific method, but also to recognize the goals of modern science. The goal of modern science is to seek the truth. The scientific method can be changed, but the goal of science can never be changed, and this is the spirit of science. ”

The scientific spirit advocated by Zhu Kezhen

Specifically, there are three aspects -

First, "Do not blindly follow, do not agree, and rely on reason." In the event of a transverse situation, they will be indomitable, not afraid of the strong, and only ask right and wrong, regardless of the interests and harms."

Second, "humble, not arbitrary, not arbitrary."

Third, "concentrate on consistency, seek truth from facts, do not groan without illness, be rigorous and tidy, and be meticulous."
