Eight years after marrying abroad, a former professor at a university in Suzhou held a wedding with his lover, and the prosecutor: suspected of committing bigamy

A few days ago, the procuratorate of Gusu District, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, released an indictment.

Chen Shixiang is a former distinguished professor at a university in Suzhou and a professor at a university in Australia. Six years after marrying his wife, Qin Meiyu, he met and became lovers with Wang Miaoling, and the two married and had a son. The prosecutor's office believes that the two should be held criminally responsible for bigamy.

On November 22, 2008, Chen Shixiang and Qin Meiyu registered their marriage in Singapore. They had two sons together after marriage. Three years later, the couple acquired citizenship of the Republic of Singapore.

In 2013, Qin Meiyu and her two sons immigrated to Australia.

A year later, Chen Shixiang and Wang Miaoling met in Suzhou, which developed into a lover's relationship.

After a year of acquaintance, Chen Shixiang bought a property in Wuzhong District, Suzhou, which he and his wife jointly owned. In the same year, he paid a down payment and a monthly payment to buy a property for Wang Miaoling in Wuzhong District. Chen Shixiang and his lover lived in two properties.

In February and March 2016, Wang Miaoling found out that she was pregnant. She was aware of Chen Shixiang's marriage and two sons. Five months later, she and Chen Shixiang held a public wedding ceremony at a hotel in Zhuzhou County, Hunan Province. Both parents attended. On November 19 of the same year, Wang Miaoling's son was born.

Two years later, Qin Meiyu discovered her husband's relationship with Wang Miaoling.

After unsuccessfully filing a negotiated divorce with Chen Shixiang, she filed divorce proceedings in Australia. On 5 September of the following year, an Australian court ruled that the marriage was dissolved.

On March 13, 2019, Chen Shixiang was arrested at the Wuzhong District Real Estate Exchange Center. Seven months later, Wang Miaoling turned herself in after the police called her. On March 11, 2020, the Wuzhong Branch of the Suzhou Public Security Bureau investigated and closed the case, and transferred Chen Shixiang and Wang Miaoling to the Gusu District Procuratorate for prosecution on suspicion of bigamy. On the same day, the two were released on guarantee pending further investigation by the procuratorate.

On October 19, 2020, the two voluntarily signed a plea affidavit expressing their admission to guilt and punishment.

The procuratorate held that Chen Shixiang and Wang Miaoling lived together as husband and wife during the marriage relationship. Wang Miaoling knew that Chen Shixiang was married and still lived with him as husband and wife.

Their acts violated the provisions of Article 258 of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China, the facts of the crime were clear, the evidence was credible and sufficient, and the two should be investigated for criminal responsibility for the crime of bigamy.

The procuratorate believes that the two people who jointly committed intentional crimes played a major role in the joint crime and were both the principal offenders. A public prosecution should be instituted, and please sentence them separately in accordance with law.

Both confessed truthfully to their main crimes, admitted the facts of the alleged crimes and were willing to accept punishment. The procuratorate believes that it may be given a lenient punishment or a lenient treatment in accordance with law.
