Comrade Yuan Longping, a native of De'an, Jiangxi, was born in Beijing in September 1930 to an intellectual family. From August 1949 to August 1953, he studied crops in the Department of Agronomy, Southwest Agricultural College. From August 1953 to January 1971, he was a teacher at Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan Province. From January 1971 to June 1984, he was a hybrid rice researcher at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (promoted to researcher in September 1978). From June 1984 to January 1988, he was the director of Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center. From January 1988 to May 1995, he served as vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, director of the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, and honorary president of the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. From May 1995 to January 2016, he served as the vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (during which time, from May 1995 to August 2015, he served as the director of the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center and the director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering and Technology Research Center). In 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 2007, he was elected a foreign member of the American Academy of Sciences.

He invented the "three-line method" indica hybrid rice technology, created the "two-line method" hybrid rice technology, founded the hybrid rice discipline, trained a large number of hybrid rice experts and technical backbones, and established and improved a complete set of hybrid rice theory and application technology system. The resolution adopted by the Sixth Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China lists the breeding and promotion of indica-type hybrid rice as an important achievement in China's science and technology, together with the successful hydrogen bomb test and the recovery of artificial satellites. General Secretary Xi Jinping has received Comrade Yuan Longping four times and fully affirmed the significant contributions made by Yuan Longping's team. In 2018, Comrade Yuan Longping was awarded the title of "Pioneer of Reform", and in 2019, he was awarded the "Order of the Republic".

Comrade Yuan Longping is the first generation of outstanding scientific and technological workers trained by New China and a brilliant model for Chinese intellectuals. As an agricultural scientist, he has been committed to the scientific research of hybrid rice with tenacious perseverance and determination for 70 years. According to statistics, since the promotion of hybrid rice in 1976, the planting area has reached 9 billion mu, and the cumulative yield of rice has increased by more than 800 billion kilograms. The increase in food production from the cultivation of hybrid rice each year could feed an additional 80 million people.

Yuan Longping has made outstanding contributions to world food security. Throughout his life, he pursued the two dreams of "cooling down the grass" and "hybrid rice covering the world", and regarded "developing hybrid rice and benefiting the people of the world" as his life's work. Hybrid rice has been introduced in more than 40 countries around the world, and 8 million hectares have been planted outside China.

Comrade Yuan Longping is a deputy to the Fifth National People's Congress and a member of the Standing Committee of the Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
