Li Shutong's last ten days: when he was cremated, he prepared four small bowls of water and wrote down the intersection of sorrow and joy

author:Tang Feng Song Yue

On October 2, 1942, Master Hongyi felt a slight sense of physical sickness, but still wrote down more than 100 Buddhist characters.

On October 4, the young Huang Yongyu picked blooming magnolia flowers in front of the Temple of the Temple of quanzhou, and Master Hongyi said under the tree, What are you doing picking flowers for? Huang Yongyu said that Lao Tzu was happy and wanted to pick it. The mage said, you come down, be careful, don't fall. Huang Yongyu bit the flower branch and jumped down, and the master invited him to sit in the room and talk to him, and Huang Yongyu was very moved. Before leaving, he asked the mage for words, and the mage agreed, asking him to come and get it in four days. After Huang Yongyu left, the Master wrote down a calligraphy: Do not seek happiness for yourself, but hope that the world will be free from suffering.

5th, Mid-Autumn Festival. The autumn sky is bright and the moon is hanging, and the radiant dew is wet. The magpie perch is undecided, and the flying fireflies are rolled in. Feeling that he was seriously ill, the mage said goodbye to his friends and said goodbye to him: A gentleman's friendship, which is as light as water. Clinging to the elephant and seeking, thousands of miles away. Asked Yu Heshi, Gur said deadly. The flowers are full of spring, and the moon is full in Tianxin.

On the 7th, the Master wrote a suicide note: Before Yu Yu died, when he was dying, after his death, he was entrusted to Master Miaolian (a disciple of Master Hongyi) to be responsible, and no one else was allowed to interfere.

On the 8th, the master's illness worsened, and he once again explained to Master Miaolian what happened, especially explaining that when cremation, he prepared four small bowls that were commonly used, filled with water, and placed on the four feet of the Shrine, so as to avoid the smell of ants from climbing up and damaging the lives of ants when incinerated.

On the 9th, cold dew. The air is cold and suspicious in the autumn evening, and the sound is slightly aware of the night. Condensed and flowing, moisturizing should be seen. On the back of the three-inch piece of paper used, the Master wrote down the four words of "Intersection of Sorrow and Joy" with trembling weiwei, and annotated the three words of "Seeing the Guan Jing" (the Guan Jing is the "Guan Wu Shou Sutra", which together with the "Amitabha Sutra" and the "Infinite Life Sutra" are called the Pure Land Three Sutras, Xiao Bian Notes. To master Myo Lotus, it is for the sake of the pen.

At dusk on the 12th, the remnants of the sun were like blood, Master Hongyi straightened out the monk's clothes, the right rib lay westward, like a lion sleeping, smiling, meditating on the Buddha's trumpet, Master Miaolian and others were on the side to help chant, at seven o'clock and three o'clock, the master's breathing gradually shortened and slightly, around eight o'clock, peacefully going west. All the disciples chanted the Buddha's trumpet in unison, and they were grieving.

Seven days later, the mage's body was cremated, the multi-colored flames soared violently, and an auspicious light burst out from the kiln door, shining hot, dispelling everything, dissipating, and quickly. The disciples picked out one hundred and eight relics and offered them to Master Myo Lotus.

Li Shutong's last ten days: when he was cremated, he prepared four small bowls of water and wrote down the intersection of sorrow and joy

Uncle Li was born in a rich family, and when he was born, a magpie entered the house with a pine branch. When he grew up, he regarded this pine branch as a treasure, and until his death, it was still hung on the wall of the meditation room, which was used to hang a hat.

Li Shutong was very strict in his family education since he was a child, and once the dinner table was tilted, his mother immediately taught him in court, Confucius knew, the seat is not sitting.

Li Shutong never forgot a sentence in the Analects: trembling and trembling, like approaching the abyss, like walking on thin ice.

Li Shutong was weak and sick since childhood, and thought that he could not live long, and once revealed the idea of monasticism in "Title Chen Shi Zeng (that is, Chen Yinke's eldest brother) Lotus Flower": a flower and a leaf, lonely fang self-appreciation. Undiscovered waves, achieve wisdom.

Since childhood, Li Shutong has liked to read poems by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei. Wang Wei, known as the "poet monk", lived an ascetic life after the age of thirty, although he was not a monk, but it was no different from a monk. His poems are idyllic and relaxed, such as "Birdsong and Stream": people idle and osmanthus flowers fall, and the night is quiet in the spring mountain sky. The moonrise frightens the mountain birds, and when the song is in the spring stream. For example, "Deer Chai": The empty mountain does not see people, but the voices of people are heard. Return to the deep forest and look back at the moss. Li Shutong was deeply affected.

In 1906, Li Shu and Dongdong traveled to Japan to study, lamenting that the national popularity was not strong, people's hearts were dead, and wrote: The desolate drama of the homeland is sad, and the thousand-year-old school is half dust. Heavy wind and rain chicken night, can there be a boy to come? As early as 1903, Lu Xun, who studied in Japan in the east, cut off his braids and wrote "Self-titled Little Portrait": Lingtai has no plan to escape the god arrow, and the wind and rain are like a rock and dark homeland. Wishing that the cold star was not noticed, I recommended Xuanyuan with my blood.

Lu Xun was one year younger than Li Shutong, and the two had very different poetry realms. Also in the face of the stormy homeland, Li Shutong called for "boys to fight", but Lu Xun wanted "I recommend Xuanyuan with my blood". Later, Lu Xun became a warrior and Li Shutong became a hermit, and these two poems can be seen at a glance.

When Li Shutong was studying in Japan, in order to raise funds for the domestic Xuhuai flood disaster, he and a group of classmates rehearsed the drama "La Traviata". Traviata is a dusty woman who is named after her lover of camellias. This traviata fell in love with a literary young man and died tragically in loneliness. Li Shutong plays the traviata woman, whose appearance is: curly hair, white top, mopping white long skirt, waist is small to a bunch, both hands are raised to support the back of the head, the head is slightly crooked to the right, the eyebrows are tight, the eye waves are flowing, it is the traviata woman's self-injurious and thin look.

Li Shutong suffered from neurasthenia at the age of 20 and learned to meditate and fast under the guidance of a senior monk. Gradually reduce food in the first week, completely inedible except for drinking water in the second week, and gradually increase meals to a regular amount in the third week. After fasting, Li Shutong felt reborn, had a sense of ethereal desire, and his nervous breakdown was cured. From then on, he began to eat vegetarian chanting and eventually became a monk.

Li Shutong was teaching at the Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School, a classmate let out a stinky fart, the classmates covered their noses, and Li Shutong played the piano without quitting. After class, Uncle Li solemnly told the farting students that they would put farts outside the door in the future, and not put them in the classroom.

Li Shutong's "Farewell Words" is cold and gentle, popular among the population, and still sings: outside the long pavilion, beside the ancient road, the grass is green and the sky. The evening wind blows the willow flute, and the sunset is outside the mountain. The end of the sky, the corner of the earth, the knowledge of the half-scattered. A scoop of turbid wine is all over the place, don't dream cold tonight.

Li Shutong's poem "Wing Ju" is indifferent and clear: Zi Yanhong is impatient with frost, and the prosperity passes through Shaoguang in a flash. Born without the power of the east wind, old age can add evening incense. In the wind, the soft strips are frequently damaged green, and the positive color in the flowers contains yellow. Mo Yan was cold and ignorant, and he had a deep understanding.

Li Shutong's last ten days: when he was cremated, he prepared four small bowls of water and wrote down the intersection of sorrow and joy

Uncle Li usually goes to bed early and gets up early, and every day at dawn, he will wipe himself with cold water, so although his physique is thin, his energy is quite condensed, and he rarely gets sick.

After Li Shutong became a monk, once came down from the mountain to Shanghai, many friends came to reminisce about the past, invited him to live in a mansion to eat a big meal, he refused all, preferring to live in a small Guandi Temple, barefoot wearing straw shoes, only a slab bed in the room, eyes downcast, a solemn face. His friend asked him to write an inscription, and he only wrote the six words "Nam no Amitabha Buddha".

Feng Zikai and Ye Shengtao invited the mage to dinner, and the mage smiled and sat in the corner by the window, and the tiny eyes emitted a crystal clear light. He leisurely twisted the rosary beads in his hand, calm and calm, but did not look cold and embarrassed. He was extremely attentive when he picked vegetables, with a look of joy and satisfaction, which reminded Ye Shengtao of the kind of careless swallowing that he did not know the taste of his mouth when he ate on weekdays, and he was secretly ashamed in his heart. Someone asked the Master for the meaning of life, and the Master replied, ashamed, without studying, unable to say anything.

The mage walked in the crowd, like a silent tree in the grassland, thriving, but it did not make people feel above the woods.

After Li Shutong's conversion to Buddhism, he abandoned his wisdom and set aside all his artistic expertise, leaving only calligraphy alone. Before his renunciation, his font was beautiful and elegant, and after his renunciation, he gradually became detached and indifferent, and his works in his later years became more rigorous, clear, easy and serene.

Ye Shengtao said, I don't understand words, I just feel that the master's words are well written and I want to see them. It is like a gentle and humble gentleman, not humble or profane, and pleasant, calm and calm, not reserved to make angry, the more you look at it, the more you taste.

Lu Xun had obtained the Master Mo Bao, and exclaimed, "Simple and perfect, Hong Ruotiancheng." Got Master Li's handwriting, fortunately.

Master Hongyi retreated at Wenzhou Qingfu Temple, his master took a wide-handed prayer post to invite him to meet, the master wept and said, master is merciful, disciples are monks, just to see through life and death, wives have been abandoned, how about friends? Begging politely declined also. The broad people were disappointed.

Master Hongyi received the most on a daily basis with the toiling masses, followed by readers, not bureaucrats. He felt that the toiling masses were at the bottom, suffering all day long, rarely happy, and it was time to use the Dharma to get through it. Readers are full of poetry and books, and they can cross themselves, and the bureaucrats have been freed from the sea of suffering and do not need to cross again.

Master Hongyi's disciples violated the precepts and rarely reprimanded them, but punished themselves for not eating. He felt that it was precisely because of his lack of indoctrination that the disciple had violated the precepts.

Uncle Li often said, do the same, like the same. When he was a teenager, he was a gentleman, in middle age, he was a gentleman, and in his later years he was a high monk of JingMu Dedao, and everything was "decent".

Master Hongyi received the letter at night and did not open it, saying that no matter what was urgent, he would have to do it tomorrow, so why bother himself and hinder sleep.

Master Hongyi prepares four pairs of shoes every day, one pair to wear for worshiping the Buddha, one pair to wear for sitting, one pair to wear when going out, and one pair to wear when going to the toilet.

The Master said that everything that has a dharma, such as dew and electricity, like a dream bubble, should be viewed as such.

Master Koichi believes that there is nothing bad in the world, everything is good. Small hotel good, broken mat good, old towel good, cabbage good, radish good, pickle good, walking good, everything good.

In his later years, Master Hongyi called himself "Eryi Old Man": He grew old without an adult, and it was worthless to say.

In 1938, when the Japanese invaded the Chinese Magic Dao, the master was about to dine when he suddenly burst into tears and told the disciples around him that we were not as good as a dog. Dogs can still guard the door for their owners, but we have no use, and what face to eat.

Master Hongyi regretted it after he left the family, he found that the Buddha Gate was not a pure land, and he still deceived me, and you fought for me, so he wanted to return to the world. A bunch of friends said that if you weren't allowed to leave the house, you had to leave the house. Now that you're out of the house, don't look back. When Master Hongyi heard this, he had no choice but to cut off his conventional thoughts and eventually become a generation of great monks.

Li Shutong's last ten days: when he was cremated, he prepared four small bowls of water and wrote down the intersection of sorrow and joy

Master Hongyi eats once a day and does not eat after noon. Do not eat vegetable hearts, winter shoots, shiitake mushrooms, because these are very expensive.

Master Hongyi once suffered from a serious illness that did not heal for many days, and thought that he was about to die, so he told his disciples that minor illnesses should be practiced by doctors, and serious illnesses should be killed. After I die, you can just chant the sutra. Luckily, it got better later.

Master Hongyi went to Feng Zikai's house and shook it a few times when he sat in a wicker chair. Feng Zikai asked why, and Hongyi said that there were probably bugs hidden inside the rattan chair, and if he sat down in a hurry, he would crush them to death, adding to his bad karma.

Zhang Ailing said, don't think I'm an arrogant person, I've never been. At least outside the walls of Master Hongyi's monastery, I was so humble.

Feng Zikai believes that Li Shutong's renunciation is the pursuit of "soul life". Life is born in the world, there is a triple life. The first material life, the house, the car, the wife, the tickets, the children, the vast majority of people have been pursuing the first life all their lives, nothing more than a "profit" word. The second spiritual life, playing some literature and art, reading and writing, is nothing more than a "name" word. The third is to "investigate life and death" and investigate the source of the soul. Uncle Li's monasticism is actually very similar to the Buddha, both abandoning wealth and glory and pursuing the world of bliss.

The reason why we should read Li Shutong is to learn the word "indifferent". We are all laymen, all wandering and struggling in the first realm, sacrificing ourselves to chew the valley. Zengguang Xianwen said that who does not love the Golden House, who does not love Yan Ruyu, who does not love Qianzhong Li, these things are all unattainable. Therefore, in the process of pursuit, we must also learn to be calm and calm, in the words of Feng Tang, not in a hurry, not afraid, and not face.

Life is difficult to give up, only because I don't understand Li Shutong. This book of Uncle Li with the philosophy of life is very attractive, it is strongly recommended that you get started with a book, click on the picture below to buy it immediately.
