33 years ago, I interviewed Zhao Ziyue, an older generation of film performance artists

author:Gen Motoya

Yesterday (June 5), I saw a self-media author publish a list of actors and troupes from different periods of the former People's Liberation Army Bayi Film Studio on the Internet, and also let readers "discover" whether there were any missing people, which aroused my interest and attention. As a post-50s, the memory of the film shot by bayi factory is particularly deep, and some film actors are very admired, looking at the long list, carefully looking for the names of actors they "know", perhaps a little too excited, actually made a mistake, mistakenly took the old actor Zhao Ziyue of Beijing Electric Film Studio, mistakenly as the bayi factory, and also left a message "to make up the name", want to think of the self-media author to apologize.

Speaking of Teacher Zhao Ziyue, the author really had a relationship with him, when I was studying in the department of Chinese of Beijing Normal University, contact writing after homework, in the senior year, at the request of Guizhou's "Film Review" magazine, about to ask Teacher Zhao Ziyue to do an interview, this nearly 2,000 thousand words of interview article was published in "Film Review" No. 1, 1984, the title is "Two Visits to Zhao Ziyue", the following is the original text, without any changes:

Zhao Ziyue played the "old solution" of The Station Manager of Xiaoqiao Station in "Icing on the Cake".

"Two Visits to Zhao Ziyue"

North Film Actors Troupe Office. With a rush of footsteps, Teacher Zhao (as people around him affectionately call him) walked in. Before I could stand up, he came over and shook my hand, smiled, and said, "I've already taken a leave of absence, and the meeting over there won't participate." This place is quiet, and there are sofas, so let's talk here, okay?"

People who have watched "The Tempest" may not forget the kind, simple, witty and humorous "old sun head". Although this is a supporting role, the impression left on people is so deep! For more than 30 years, Zhao Ziyue has participated in the shooting of more than 30 films, and most of them are supporting roles like this. Such as the "old solution" in "Icing on the Cake", the "old landlord" in "Song of Youth", the "pseudo county magistrate" in "After the Armistice", etc., in addition, he also participated in the filming of films such as "Red Flag Spectrum", "Journey of Ten Thousand Miles", "The Story of Brother Bao", "Willow Dark Flowers and Bright", although they are all supporting roles, Zhao Ziyue has never been perfunctory. On the contrary, he always carefully speculates and carefully understands the characters he plays. In the early 1960s, he served as the head of the actors troupe, and no matter how busy the administrative affairs were, he was never sloppy in filming, and he often rode on the way to work to memorize lines and figure out roles.

Zhao Ziyue plays the old sun head in "The Tempest"

In "After the Armistice", Zhao Ziyue plays the pseudo-county magistrate. In one scene, the incompetence and stupidity of the pseudo-county magistrate made our representative laugh, while he himself was inexplicable and foolishly accompanied by the other party to laugh. The audience off the screen couldn't laugh even more.

Speaking of this play, he said: "When performing the laughter of the pseudo-county magistrate, if you do not understand why you laugh, you cannot play his smirk; only when you understand the laughter of the other party, you can perform the laughter of the other party that does not understand." Even if you play a supporting role, you can't just get into your own role. You must understand the character you play from the opponent, from all aspects. ”

Teacher Zhao also told me a small story. Once, "Red Flag Spectrum" was filming a scene: the old landlord Feng Lanchi was walking in front, and his housekeeper Li Decai followed behind to hold an umbrella for him. "Stop!" The director ordered it. I could tell that the director was not satisfied.

Zhao Ziyue played Xiang Wu'er in "Cuigang Red Flag"

Take a break. Ge Cunzhuang, an actor who plays the old landlord, said to Zhao Ziyue, who plays the head of the local government: "Teacher Zhao, I am walking in front, you hold an umbrella for me, and follow behind, I am really embarrassed." At that time, Zhao Ziyue was the head of the actors troupe, and he was much older. Zhao Ziyue saw Ge Cunzhuang's concerns. Immediately said: "You know, I play a supporting role, I should follow you, hold an umbrella for you, and cooperate with your play is what I should and must do!"

I am reminded of the words of the poet Tagore: "The cause of the fruit is noble, and the cause of the flower is sweet; but let me do the cause of the leaf, which hangs humbly and intently on the shade of the green." Isn't Zhao Ziyue exactly such a "green leaf" that willingly reflects the "red flower"?

The second time I visited Zhao Ziyue was in his home, a large courtyard in a small alley in Xinjiekou, Beijing. The simple living rooms are almost "shabby" compared to the "modern" suites of the 80s. How many people will believe that the owner of this house is an old cadre, old party member, and old artist who has participated in the revolution for more than 50 years, has more than 40 years of party experience, and has been in the shadow for more than 30 years?

Zhao Ziyue is a native of Xi'anze County, Shanxi. He loved music and painting from an early age, learned to play the flute at the age of 13, and later learned to pull a board beard and play three strings. The inner page of "Film Review" is "Two Visits to Zhao Ziyue"

On the screen, Zhao Ziyue is a true actor. In life, he maintained the true character of a communist. His family never had the luxury of extravagant pomp and circumstance, and he has always maintained the good tradition of hard work in the old Liberated Areas. Comrade Zhou Libo's lover, Aunt Lin Lan, the screenwriter of "The Tempest", once introduced: Minced meat fried sauce noodles are Teacher Zhao's favorite home-cooked meal. However, in 1981, he donated 10,000 yuan to the Beijing Film Actors Troupe as a fund for the "Young Actors Progress Award".

Referring to this donation, Teacher Zhao looked back on his wife with deep pain. In May 1966, Zhao Ziyue visited Japan as a member of the Chinese film delegation. Soon after returning to China, he was beaten into the troupe "the number one ruling faction that takes the capitalist road" and was beaten up, taken by "plane", and "squatted in a black house". Homes were raided, clothes were taken away, books were destroyed, and bankbooks confiscated. His wife, who had long since retired, was a sick and bedridden person, but he was forced to clean the toilet, relying on only one loaf of bread every day to fill his hunger. She died tragically in December of that year. After smashing the "Gang of Four", the organization implemented a policy for Zhao Ziyue and returned his deposits, at which time he learned that this was the money that his wife had saved for many years and deposited in the bank.

An envelope from the editorial board of Film Review

"Seventy years of life." Zhao Ziyue is already a 74-year-old man, but he does not obey the old age and still keeps forgetting his work. In 1981 alone, he participated in the filming of three feature films ("Shoko the Camel", "Wrangler", "Ruyi") and three TV series ("Little TV Series", "The Hands Pour Out the Happy Flower", and "The Opening of the Market"). Not long ago, he finally moved into the new home in the dormitory area of Beiying, but he still enjoyed the blessings at home without "peace", and he was busy with the filming of the new film "Rich and Noble", playing Ren Laole and running around with the film crew. He is showing people that time and calamity have not indelibly destroyed his enthusiasm for life and artistic youth!

On the way back from the interview, my mood was difficult to calm down for a long time. The words he said, "I'm an ordinary actor," echoed in my ears all the time. (Originally published in Film Review, No. 1, 1984)
