Zhao Ziyue, formerly known as Zhao Zhiyue and pen name Yike, was born on July 31, 1909 in Chengguan Village, Chengguan Town, Guxian County, Shanxi Province, to a civilian family. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the head of the actor troupe of the Beijing Film Studio and the third and fourth directors of the China Film Association. In 1979, he attended the Fourth National Literary Congress. In 1985, he was elected honorary president of the Chinese Film Performing Arts Society. In 1991, he won the Special Honor Award of the Third "Society Award" of the Chinese Film Performing Arts Society; in 2005, he was one of the 100 outstanding actors in the 100 years of Chinese film. He died in Beijing on March 25, 1997, at the age of 88.

Zhao Ziyue grew up without a mother, his father graduated from the law department of Peking University of China in his early years, and served as the county magistrate of Huairen County in Shanxi Province during the Republic of China. Zhao Ziyue grew up with his grandparents, his grandfather was a painter, under the influence of his grandfather, Zhao Ziyue liked folk art since he was a child, and learned to play the flute, pull the board beard, play the three strings and so on at the age of twelve or thirteen. After graduating from high school, Zhao Ziyue was admitted to the Shanxi Provincial First Normal School, and after graduating in 1931, he was admitted to the Hangzhou National Art College. He dropped out of school a year later due to family difficulties. He worked as a music teacher at Taiyuan First Girls' Normal School and as an art teacher at Taiyuan Poor People's Middle School. In 1934, he went to Shijiazhuang Zhengtai Railway Rotary Primary School to teach. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1936. After the "July Seven Incident" in 1937, he joined the Anze County Sacrifice National Salvation League association and served as the head of the working group of the association. In 1938, he served as an officer in the Propaganda Department of the Taihang District Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1940, he became the artistic director and deputy director of the Taihang Mountain Theater Troupe. During this period, he wrote the drama script "The Man Who Laughed", "An Axe" and some songs. Soon, introduced by Lü Ban, he was transferred to the Taihang Military Region Pioneer Theater Troupe as an assistant, and participated in the performances of the drama "Frontline" and the opera "White Haired Girl" (as Yang Bailao) and the Jin opera "Fishing and Killing The Family".
During the Battle of Pinghan, Zhao Ziyue worked in the prisoners' shelter in the front. Later, he was ordered to form the Peking Opera Troupe of the Taihang Military Region and served as the head of the Peking Opera Troupe. In 1949, he went to Beiping to attend the first National Literary Congress. He was a director of the China Drama Association and the vice chairman of the Shanxi Dramatists Association. In 1950, the film crew of the Beijing Film Studio's first feature film "The Hero of Lüliang" went to Shanxi to shoot the location, and Zhao Ziyue was invited to play the old farmer Kang Tiancheng in the film, thus stepping onto the screen. Zhao Ziyue played the district party secretary and guerrilla leader Hei Lao Cai in the feature film "The Legend of the New Children's Heroes", which he participated in, and won the third prize medal for excellent films from 1949 to 1955 issued by the Ministry of Culture. In 1951, he was transferred to the Beijing Film Studio, and successively served as an actor, the chief of the actor section, and the deputy head and head of the North Film Actor Troupe.
