"The Fifth" healed my fears,

It touched us deeply.

Eiko | "The Fifth" healed my fears| to talk about my Book of the Heart

In the summer of 2020, I had an operation. In the days of waiting for surgery, my heart is often occupied by emotions of fear, although I have the meticulous care and comfort of my family and friends.

But the thought of those cold surgical instruments about to cut my body, even though it was to save me, I felt a rush of confusion in my heart.

The day before the operation, I wanted to calm myself down, get a good night's sleep, and prepare to fight with the doctor the next day. Then I remembered the picture book "The Fifth.".

The illustrations in this picture book are more special in terms of color, composition and text. The tone of the picture is a dark dark blue, a row of chairs against the wall sits in turn penguins without arms, ducks without a wheel, hairy bears with eye patches on their left eyes and bandages on their right arms, frogs with tapes on their backs, puppets with broken noses, and on their right is a bright door—no one knows what is happening inside the door, and overhead is a chandelier that dangles over the door and dangles with cold light dangling as the door opens and closes.

The strong color contrast and the content of the picture are a little "weird", and the uneasy expressions of the five toys sitting on the chairs, repeated many times the words "the door is open / one out / one goes in / There are still left ..." are conveying uneasiness, anxiety, and depressed emotions. However, every time the door opens, the sound and lively toys that come out of the door make the reader feel that the bright light inside the door is so warm and hopeful.

If the text of the picture book is extracted from the picture, it is actually a poem:

The doors opened / One came out / One went in / There were four left

The doors opened / One came out / One went in / There were three left

The doors opened / one came out / one went in / There were two left

The doors opened / one came out / one went in / the last one

The door opened /one came out/went in alone

It was this "going in alone" that hit me! I have experienced firsthand that, like many classic picture books, the fifth by the poet Ernst Youngell and the illustrator Norman Jung was written not only for children, but also for the salvation of the hearts of adults – this time, it seems to have been written for me as well.

The picture book is called "The Fifth", which refers to the last little puppet who "went in alone". The emphasis on "going in alone" is indeed only a small puppet on the surface, and the deep meaning is because the previous anxious and uneasy waiting has a companion, and the companions who are sick with the same disease are invisibly sharing their own unknown fears of what happens in the door and what will happen to them; now, all this must be faced by himself.

The before-and-after expression changes of the little puppets are very noticeable. The little puppet on the title page sat alone in a chair, turning his head to look at his right side, his expression nervous. The first time the door opened, it followed everyone to the door, and the little puppet seemed to be smiling - it had time to watch others "perform", so it was more relaxed, perhaps also self-soothing;

Page by page: the door opens, one comes out, then, one goes in, the door closes... The atmosphere became more and more tense, and the expression of the little puppet became more and more nervous, and later, the frog slowly climbed in, the door was closed, the room was empty, and when only the little puppet was left alone, it could be seen that it was terrified to the extreme, and the tears flowed down... Although I was not nervous enough to shed tears, the fear of "going in alone" was very deep!

What made me feel healed the most was the last picture.

None of the first four entrances opened the door, and when the little puppet entered alone, the door opened to the reader and to the little puppet—and in front of him was such an amiable old doctor. The little puppet must be responding to the old doctor's smile at this moment, associating with the toys that came out of the door in front of him to get a new life, and his heart was full of confidence in himself!

I suddenly had a conviction that my doctor was one such doctor!

Coincidentally, the person who operated on me really resembled the doctor who healed the little puppet in a picture book: a light on the top of his head, a cute smile, and only a big red nose that I saw when I woke up from general anesthesia. At that time, the chief surgeon was standing in front of my bed talking to my family, saw me wake up, and gently asked me, "Do you feel okay?" "At that moment, the picture of the little puppet facing the toy doctor appeared in my mind again, and it felt really good!

The late famous psychologist Li Zixun once wrote a commentary for this picture book, "The Emotional World of Children", saying: Life is always full of unknown fate. Although reason keeps telling us that we are safe, accidents continue to happen in unimaginable ways. Although the little toys came out of the closed, dark and lighted huts like new life, the little puppet with the broken nose still waited with increasing anxiety and loneliness, waiting for the situation and unknown fate he was about to face.

However, after facing the anxiety alone, the experience of being healed is not only joy, but also faith in life!

Thanks for such a wonderful picture book as "The Fifth"!
