In the first year of Long Shuo (661), the Hui leader Bo Yan, who had always been friendly with Tang, died, and BiSu, who succeeded to the throne, turned to Tang as an enemy. Emperor Gaozong of Tang commanded Zheng Rentai as the main general and Xue Rengui as his deputy general, leading his troops to the Tianshan Mountains to attack the ninth surname Tiele. Before leaving, Tang Gaozong gave a banquet in the inner temple, during which Tang Gaozong said to Xue Rengui: "In ancient times, there were people who were good at archery, who could penetrate seven layers of armor. Xue Rengui answered the order, and took a bow and arrow to shoot at it, only to hear the bow string sound, and the arrow had already pierced through the five armors. Emperor Gaozong of Tang was taken aback and immediately ordered someone to take Jianjia and reward Xue Rengui.
