I used to be behind
Looking at my studies alone, I met the criteria of a good student in the minds of absolutely most people: I won the first prize in the National Physics Competition in high school and was sent to Tsinghua University; then I was admitted to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on a full scholarship; and then I went to Brown University to pursue a doctorate.
Although he has not continued to do academics, he has spread scientific knowledge on the Internet and has become one of the most influential popular science masters.
If you only look at these superficial resumes, outsiders will most likely think that I am very talented in mathematics, and it seems that my life has been quite smooth so far, but this is by no means the case. In fact, in the study of physics, which seems to be what I am best at, I was once at the bottom.
When I first started high school, I was surrounded by many excellent classmates, all of whom were the top students in the city. Compared to them, my physics and mathematics are very poor, which is not a modest statement, how bad is it? A 150-point physics paper, I only got 40 points. It's hard for you to imagine that this is a first prize student in a national physics competition, with grades when they first entered school.
At that time, I was almost in a state of abandonment for the subject of physics, and my feelings were the same as most people: I understood every sentence of the textbook, but at the beginning of doing the problem, doing a mistake, it felt quite desperate. Looking at the students around them who have learned well, especially those "seed players" who have just entered the school and are selected by the teachers to enter the competition class, they can really only sigh and sincerely admire their IQ.
I have a good teacher
How did the transformation to ask me happen? I have to say that I met a very good physics teacher, Mr. Xiong. Mr. Xiong is not only excellent in teaching, the key is that he has a professional attitude of not giving up on any student.
In the face of a student like me who only scored 40 points, Mr. Xiong showed full concern and encouraged me to participate in the training of physics competitions. My thought at the time was: Is there something wrong with this teacher's brain? How can a student with such poor grades be encouraged to participate in a competition? Even the head teacher objected to my going to the competition class.
After I got the guarantee qualification of Tsinghua University, I specifically asked Teacher Xiong this question, and Teacher Xiong's answer was very surprising to me, he said:
"The first time you took the exam, you got 40 points out of 150, which is very low, but you got 80 points on the second test. Although it is also a failure, the rate of progress has reached 100%, so I think you have a lot of potential. ”
What physics has brought me
Teacher Xiong's answer was not rough. Later, he told me that in fact, similar words of encouragement, he had said to many of his classmates, but only I took it seriously.
Of course, having a good teacher does not guarantee that you can suddenly change from a bottom student to the first place, the process is quite arduous, but in fact, it is not the kind of hard work and harvest that we usually think. For the study of subjects such as physics and mathematics, its progress curve will make you have a great sense of gain.
I would describe this sense of harvest as follows: one point of hard work, no gain; very hard work, one point of harvest; one hundred percent of hard work, ten thousand harvest. For the study of a discipline like physics, it improves your cognitive level and the cognitive dimension of the world, which can change your way of thinking from the book.
When you don't understand it, it's really difficult for you, but once you understand it, it's integrated. The "opening up the second pulse of Ren Dou" mentioned in the martial arts novel is probably this feeling, because what you have achieved is a qualitative improvement at the level of thinking.
I remember vividly that when I studied Gauss's theorem in electromagnetism, I didn't understand it at first. Although Gauss's theorem is a very basic theorem from the current point of view, when I first learned it, it was a huge challenge to my understanding.
I remember holding the book, flipping back and forth through the two pages of Gauss's theorem, pacing back and forth in the hallway in front of the classroom for almost three hours, and then the moment I realized it was a momentary epiphany.
Looking back at the relevant topic, it was really a flying feeling, and I suddenly felt that the fog in front of me had dispersed. Clear-sightedness is probably what it means to feel this way.
So, what do I have to say that physics has brought me? All I can say is that my understanding of physics can make me really feel that I have become a smart person, and I really feel the improvement of wisdom. And this ascension is a leap, like a quantum energy level, not a step-by-step process.
Most people may feel that advanced physics is very far away from our daily lives, it is a castle in the air, something in an ivory tower. But I just got too much benefit, too much wisdom, too much cognitive upgrade from the process of learning physics.
So I can't wait to introduce this benefit I've received to more people through my way. So there is this seemingly hardcore, but it is actually not difficult to understand the "six pole physics".
I know how to say it
It's like if a person wants to lose weight, he must ask for experience from people who have been fat and have lost weight successfully, rather than learning from a person who is born thin.
The reason why I am confident in teaching physics is precisely because I myself have come all the way from a bottom student. In the process of learning, I have no so-called talent and intuition to rely on, but I must be down-to-earth and learn physics with the most layman's attitude.
So, I know exactly how to explain some of the most difficult knowledge to non-physics majors, but who are curious about physics, because that's how I taught myself.
I am acutely aware that because physics is our way of connecting to the lowest level of the world, the words "avenue to simplicity" are most appropriate to describe physics. Even with the most advanced knowledge of physics, the ideas in it are not difficult to understand if they are thoroughly explained.
Those with high physical proficiency are not able to understand complex concepts directly, but after long-term learning, they can quickly disassemble complex concepts into multiple simple concepts. People can't directly understand complex concepts, depending on whether you have the patience to disassemble, or whether there is a person who can disassemble, to give you a clear and simple way.
