The Blue-White-Red Trilogy – Kieslowski leaves the last color of the world

author:Half-cut clown

1994 was a year of blowouts for outstanding works in the film industry, including director Kieslowski's blue-white-red trilogy of the finale of the blue-white-red trilogy "The Red of the Blue-White-Red Trilogy". The fourth installment of the trilogy will cover the blue-white-red trilogy produced from 1993 to 1994.

In 1993, the first part of the blue-white-red trilogy, The Blue of the Blue-White-Red Trilogy, was released. In the movie, the heroine Julie loses her beloved husband. In order to forget the pain, she threw away all of her husband's music manuscripts, but had no intention of learning from her husband's friend Oliver that his husband was unfaithful to her. In the end, Julie chose to face everything and start a new life. With Kieslowski's superb guidance, "Blue of the Blue, White and Red Trilogy" won the Golden Lion Award at that year's Venice Film Festival.

Less than half a year later, the second part of the trilogy, "The White of the Blue-White-Red Trilogy", appeared in the audience's field of vision. The film tells the story of Carol, a Pole, who takes revenge on his French wife Dominigo. Kieslowski's directing standard in this film was recognized, winning the Silver Bear Award for Best Director at the 1994 Berlin Film Festival.

In May 1994, the last part of the blue-white-red trilogy, "The Red of the Blue-White-Red Trilogy", was released. The film revolves around Valentin, a college student, August, a law student who is about to graduate, and a retired old judge. Valentine's boyfriend in London grew increasingly aloof, as did Auguste's girlfriend. By chance, Valentine meets the old judge, who tells him the story of how he was betrayed by his beloved when he was young, and on the other hand, the young Augustine was also betrayed by his girlfriend. Auguste wanted to leave Paris and go to London to relax, and Valentine boarded the same ship and wanted to go to London to find her boyfriend. After the storm, the passenger ship was shipwrecked, and August and Valentine survived. "The Red of the Blue,White-Red Trilogy" was also recognized by peers, nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Kieslowski was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director the following year.

Ostensibly, one connection in the trilogy is the overlap of the main actors. For example, Julie, played by Juliet Binoche, in addition to being the main character in the first part, also had cameos in the second and third parts. Another interesting point is that at the end of the third part of the "Blue, White and Red Trilogy", the survivors of the passenger ship's death happen to be the main characters in the three films. This is also a metaphor for the similarity between the three stories.

The three colors corresponding to the blue, white and red trilogy correspond to the three colors in the French flag, representing freedom, equality and fraternity. These three colors are also the main colors of the three films. Director Kieslowski not only makes the film poetic and beautiful by applying these three colors in these three films, but also expresses the idea of the metaphor of these three colors through the content of the story.

In the movie "Blue of the Blue,White-Red Trilogy," what binds the heroine Julie free is the memory. In the end, the heroine gets relief and finds freedom in a way that is not to give up the memory, but to face the memory and solve the pain caused by the memory. In White, Carol, a Pole who comes to Paris, has been seeking equality with his wife, so he has started an illegal business and used ruse to get her to jail. By the time he had done all this, he was already destined to be inferior to his wife. The last part of the trilogy, "Red", tells the love story of a parallel universe. The young Augustus is like a portrait of the old judge's youth. The old judge did not try after being hurt by love when he was young, but Auguste seemed to have the possibility of falling with Valentine after being hurt. And whether this may exist or not, the director used an open-ended ending, leaving room for the audience to imagine.

The Blue, Red and White trilogy is the masterpiece of director Kieslowski, who retired after filming the series. Perhaps the series was too draining for him, and he died two years later during heart surgery. Although he is far away from us, the poetry, beauty and reflection he has incorporated into this series will never be forgotten.
