  People's Musician

  Zhang Yulin

The pagoda pursues a splendid run,

The torrent merges into the de-danger suspension.

Paris politely refuses affection and profit,

The source of Huaxia is connected with flesh and blood.

  The blossoms of the earth,

The Yellow River chorus soars into the clouds.

  Pro-fill music blowing trumpet,

  Inspire the people for eternity.

On this day in history, on October 30, 1945, musician Xian Xinghai passed away.

Xian Xinghai, born on June 13, 1905, died on October 30, 1945, formerly known as Huang Xun and Kong Yu, whose ancestral home was Panyu, Guangdong, was born in Macao, is a composer and pianist in modern China, and is the most widely known for his "Yellow River Chorus" composed in 1939.

When Xian Xinghai was a teenager, he loved music very much, and in 1918 he entered the violin of Lingnan University Affiliated Middle School and participated in amateur bands. In 1926, he entered the Music Institute of Peking University and the Music Department of the National Art College. In 1928, he entered the Shanghai National University and went to Paris in 1929 to study work-study, where he studied under the famous violinist Pani Obedofell and the famous composer Paulo Duca. In 1931, he was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris.

In the spring of 1935, Xian Xinghai graduated from the senior composition class of the Paris Conservatory and decided to return to his motherland to write songs and compose music for the motherland and the toiling masses.

After returning to China in 1935, he actively participated in the Anti-Japanese Salvation Movement, composed a large number of militant mass songs, and composed music for progressive films such as "Top Gun", "Youth March", drama "Resurrection" and "Great Thunderstorm". From 1935 to 1938, he composed various types of vocal works such as "National Salvation Army Song", "Only Afraid of Not Resisting", "Guerrilla Army Song", "The Road Is Open", "Vast Siberia", "Children of the Motherland", "Go Behind the Enemy", "On the Taihang Mountain" and so on. After that, he wrote "Blood", "Midnight Song", and "Love of the Yellow River" in the film "Midnight Song". After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he wrote the theme song of the anti-war drama "Defending the Lugou Bridge", and accompanied the troupe to tour various places, writing wherever he went, and created nearly 400 songs, and everywhere he went, he resounded with the salvation songs he created.

On October 1, 1938, under the arrangement of the Wuhan office of the Eighth Route Army, Xian Xinghai and Qian Yunling, newly married, embarked on the road to Yan'an. In 1938, he went to Yan'an and served as the head of the music department of Lu Xun Academy of Literature and Art.

On June 14, 1939, Xian Xinghai was introduced to the Communist Party of China by Zhao Yimin and Xu Yixin of the "Luyi" branch. He wrote in his diary: "Even if I am on my first day of joining the Party today, I can say that I am the most glorious day in my life. I hope to change my mind and outlook on life and fight for proletarian music!"

On April 13, 1939, the anti-enemy drama team performed the "Yellow River Chorus" for the first time in the auditorium of Shaanxi North Public School. The "Yellow River Chorus" soon spread from the great hall of the Northern Shaanxi Public School to all parts of the country, and Mao Zedong also liked it very much, and specially received Xian Xinghai alone, gave him a Parker fountain pen and a bottle of Parker ink, and encouraged him: "I hope you will create more and better musical works for the people." Zhou Enlai wrote an inscription for Xian Xinghai: "Roar for the War of Resistance, compose a voice for the masses!"

In 1940, a man named Liu Liangmo brought the score of the Yellow River Chorus to the United States, and in 1943 the Princeton University Choir sang in English for the first time in the United States. Since then, the "Yellow River Chorus" as a symbol of the Chinese national spirit has gradually become famous overseas.

On the night of October 30, 1945, Xian Xinghai, who was nearly 40 years old, unfortunately died of illness at the Kremlin Hospital in Moscow, Soviet Union.
