On April 1, 1919, Lu Hongen was born in a family of intellectuals in Shanghai, influenced by the family environment, Lu Hongen received systematic cultural education since he was a child, in the process of education, his parents found that Lu Hongen had a high artistic talent, in this case, his father found a teacher who was proficient in the organ to teach Lu Hongen piano, under the teacher's teaching, Lu Hongen's piano skills are becoming more and more sophisticated.

In 1937, Lu Hongen was admitted to the Shanghai National Music School with excellent results, and in the National Music School, Lu Hongen came into contact with many musicians, such as Professor Ding Shande, Professor Ying Shangren, etc., under their teaching, Lu Hongen not only mastered the skillful piano skills, but also learned vocal music.

At the same time, Lu Hongen also made a group of like-minded friends, such as Li Delun, Qin Pengzhang, Han Zhongjie, etc., who later became the pioneers and cadres who founded the art of conducting in New China.

At that time, Shanghai was still under the iron rule of the Japanese army, and in this case, Lu Hongen's talents did not have much room to be used, and he could only play the piano in bars and dance halls, barely surviving on a meager income.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, under the recommendation of Huang Yijun, Lu Hongen became a timpani player of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, here, Lu Hongen trained hard and created his own trick of playing the timpani, this year, Lu Hongen scored the film "Wu Xun Biography" starring Zhao Dan, but the film suffered nationwide criticism in 1952, and Lu Hongen had to publish an article in the newspaper for review.

In the summer of 1956, the first National Music Week was held in Beijing, during which Chen Yi, then Vice Premier of the State Council, invited the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to hold a concert for the envoys in China.

At that time, although Lu Hongen had been tortured to the point that he was not presentable, he still did not give in, he said:

"I want to live, but I don't want to live like a walking corpse, I am not free, I would rather die, the Cultural Revolution is tyrannical, it is a catastrophe, it is a disaster, I don't want to live in a tyranny, a catastrophe, a catastrophe."

On September 26, 1979, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra held a memorial meeting for Lu Hongen in the hall of the Longhua Revolutionary Cemetery in Shanghai, announcing that Lu Hongen had been rehabilitated and all his reputation was restored.
