Photography Topic Discussion: Respecting the Classics and Looking To the Future

Discussion Post: Three topics that represent personal views only.

Topic one

Do your photos have a post-production?

In my opinion, it is the photo that has a post-production bar.

First of all, we need to know that the color and effect of any different camera and lens are different.

As early as the film era, film shooting produced by different film manufacturers had different colors and effects. After the shooting was completed, everyone used a series of post-production techniques such as darkroom processing and reverse film to produce their own photos.

In today's digital age, different camera manufacturers have several automatic rendering modes in the camera: landscape, vivid, portrait, neutral and a series of others. The color of photos taken with different rendering effects also has a lot of differences.

In fact, a simple understanding is film, digital automatic rendering, are the manufacturer's fixed color rendering of photos, then if we like or want to pursue a certain photo color (such as the common "german taste", etc.) will be indirectly kidnapped on the manufacturer, we must buy the corresponding camera or lens, film, etc.

So, any photo taken is post-rendered. It's just a few post-rendering modes fixed by the manufacturer.

Society is developing, and the art of photography has also made earth-shaking progress. With the advent of a series of retouching software such as Photoshop, this situation has been fundamentally reversed. We don't have to be forced to buy the corresponding equipment in order to pursue a certain color or a certain color, because all colors can be implemented in software, which is often referred to as post-grading.

It's a great thing for us to call up our favorite colors in order to pursue our favorite colors or styles that are no longer tied to manufacturers. (This is just color grading)

Topic two

What do you think of winning works from 20 years ago or even earlier?

I respect the classics, and I have a lot of respect for countless photographic predecessors, but I don't imitate the works of 20 years ago or even older, because I am looking for the future.

I often see some people in some photography forums forwarding some master works, and then say, "Look, this is the real master work, real cow."

Indeed, these photographs are very good works in my opinion, and the photographer has put a lot of effort into shooting them. But! Please note the time these photos were taken. This is a work from 20 years ago or even earlier. So, I can only say that it was really great to be able to shoot such a work in that era.

Now that it is 2021, whether it is the development of society or the changes brought by science and technology to photography, or the art of photography itself has undergone earth-shaking changes from that year. Today's work evaluation standards and aesthetics are very different from those of decades ago.

If we only talk about shooting photographic works, why should we imitate the past, imitate the style and aesthetics of decades ago, I think, after decades of social, technological and photographic art development, the current photographic works are at least generally much better than before.

At least what I'm after is the future, to shoot more innovative, creative, innovative works, rather than going back to the past.

Of course, this does not include some news documentary themes, and some other event works. Because there are some special types of photographic works that are timeless classics.

At the end of World War II, McDuffie snapped a "kiss of victory" in Times Square.

Wait, this kind of work or other special work, no matter how society and photography develops, it will not be overwhelmed by time, because this is the eternal classic.

In addition, I would like to say that in fact, looking at these old award-winning works, it also depends on what is your starting point? If you are a historian, you will think that those works are quite precious. If you look at it with the mentality of photographic art, then you can only say that this is a classic, but this is a classic of that era!

Nostalgia party, equipment party or people with certain plots except, everyone's hobbies and pursuits are different, in fact, in the end, there is no need to entangle, like it, after all, it is a hobby.

Topic three

Is the highly dynamic work that comes with bracketing post-compositing or through gradient filters true or false?

People often say to me: What you do in the post-production of your photos is beautiful, but it is too fake.

If the premise is to restore the real environment of the scene (photography creation, creativity, etc. are not included), in some environments with huge light ratios, if you do not use the bracketing post-synthesis or gradient filter, the work taken directly is a fake photo.

I am a photographer shooting outdoor subjects, and what I have always pursued is to restore the real environment of the scene (that is, the environment seen by the naked eye) by all means.

We must first understand that our human tolerance with the naked eye is very high. For example, in large light ratio environments such as sunrise or sunset, we can see almost all highlight details and dark details. Limited by the camera's technology, the camera can either see highlight details or dark details, but it can't show them all at the same time.

Here are three examples of my own photographs:

Wonderland Red Cloud

I synthesized this work from many photos with different exposures. But, that's exactly what I've seen with the naked eye, with highlights and dark details at the same time.

This one can see the dark details

This one shows highlight detail

The effect of the camera single shot, I think a normal person's naked eye to see the scene will not be like this, haha!

Only represent personal views, if there is something wrong, look at it with a smile, thank you!

Feel free to upload three pieces of work to enjoy before the end
