On January 11, 2021, Baidu announced the official establishment of a smart car company to enter the automotive industry as a complete vehicle manufacturer. This company is Jidu Automobile, a joint venture between Baidu and Geely on March 2. Baidu Group holds 55% of the shares, and Geely Group holds 45% of the shares.
China's strongest autonomous driving technology company and one of China's largest auto companies have joined forces. But the company hasn't built even a single car so far.
In fact, Baidu bet on cars earlier than this, but it has never formed a clear strategic route.
In December 2017, Baidu invested in WM Motors. In March 2019 and September 2020, Baidu increased its capital twice and became one of the major shareholders of WM Motors. Note that baidu does not hold a stake in WM. But Weima did not break out of the siege.
In 2021, Baidu announced the launch of an L3-level capability of smart electric heavy trucks, this car is called "Xingtu 1 generation". But this made everyone more confused, and the first smart car Baidu built was a heavy truck.
