On the evening of 22 January, the Secretary for Food and Health of the HKSAR Government, Mr Chan Siu-chiu, held a press conference on the situation of the novel coronavirus in Hong Kong. Chan said the first case of highly suspicious novel coronavirus infection was found in Hong Kong.

The patient, 39 years old, took the G1015 high-speed train from Wuhan to Shenzhen North Railway Station on the 21st, and took the G5607 high-speed train to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station that night. The patient was found by quarantine personnel due to fever and cough symptoms, and after preliminary testing, he tested positive for the new type of pneumonia. The patient reported that he had been in good health and had not visited medical institutions, wet markets or seafood markets, or had no contact with wild animals, poultry or people with pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infections.

The patient has now been transferred to the Infectious Disease Centre at Margaret Hospital for isolation treatment. The Department of Health of the HKSAR Government has set up a hotline at 2125 1122 to call on passengers travelling on the same train with the patient to contact the DH and the DH will assess that close contacts will arrange isolation and non-close contacts will be subjected to medical surveillance.
