Britain's Dartmore Mountain ponies are now beginning to be used to make sausages and horse chops. Their meat products are currently sold in Devon markets, online and in local restaurants, which are said to be due to fear of pony extinction.
This unique horse meat dish is said to taste similar to beef, but it is a little more sweet than beef. These horses are mainly supplied by Charlotte Faulkner of the Dartmore Mountain Pony Association.
Charlotte believes that the value of ponies as food can attract farmers to work to protect these breeds and prevent them from extinction. Because hundreds of horses now die every year, and because there is no market for these horses, farmers have little incentive to take steps to protect them.
Apparently, though, not everyone agreed with Charlotte, who received numerous swearing calls and complaints from animal activists as soon as her idea was raised.
Charlotte, however, insisted that this was the best way to protect and help the ponies, so she offered her horses to the market and online stores for processing and selling. The Dartmore Mountain Pony Association said on their website: "In the past few years, many farmers have thought that ponies are not easy to keep and are reluctant to continue breeding, which requires us to find a way for farmers to profit from breeding ponies." ”
