According to the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University in the United Kingdom, Peter John Rhodes, a classicalist and ancient Greek historian, died on October 27, 2021, at the age of 81.

Peter John Rhodes is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University and a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (FBA), former President of the British Classical Association, and a well-known expert in ancient Greek history and classics in contemporary Britain. Born in August 1940, he was educated and received his PhD from Oxford University. From 1965 he taught in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University, where he became a professor in 1983 until his retirement in 2005, where he was also emeritus. In addition to his important position in the British classical community, he also had extensive contacts and contacts with the academic circles of the United States, Denmark, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Canada, Israel, Australia and Japan.
Professor Rhodes's main research direction is the history of Greece in the classical period, especially in the history of ancient Greece, the political system of the city-states and the study of Thucydides, including the authoritative annotation of the "Athenian System", the collation and publication of a number of ancient Greek history and legal inscriptions, etc. Professor Rhodes is also the author of The Athenian Boule (1972) and Ancient Democracy and Modern Ideology (2003), and has participated in the compilation of authoritative academic works and dictionaries such as Cambridge Ancient History, Oxford Dictionary of Classical Studies, and The New Poly Encyclopedia of Classical Studies. Professor Rhodes' classic introductory book Thucydides, written at the invitation of Bloomsbury Academic Press, was recently translated as Chinese and published by Wuhan University Press.
