After the epidemic in 2020, I re-read Peter Drucker's book "Management Challenges in the 21st Century" and I felt very deeply.

In this book, he talks about several aspects, "the new paradigm of management", "strategy - a new inevitable trend", "the leader of change", "the challenge of information", "the productivity of knowledge workers", and "self-management".

Today I will focus on three main issues:

01 The Challenges of Information Technology

In the 21st century, information technology, mobile Internet, big data, blockchain, and artificial intelligence will affect every one of us, every organization, and can change the way each of us lives and works.

After I returned from the United States in 1991, I lectured in the United States every summer in July and August. However, the epidemic in 2020 is coming, and it is impossible to go. The University of Missouri and the Peter Drucker School of Management invited me to give classes to their students online.

In the past, online education in the United States was earlier and more mature than ours, because in the past we did not pay much attention to online education, and in the past we only partially used to teach adult education through TV night classes. Comparatively speaking, I think it is still face to face, and face-to-face lectures in the classroom are much better than online lectures. But after the epidemic came, there was no way.

Anyway, lectures can be given through video, through the Internet. Before 2020, I need a visa to fly to the United States and stay in a hotel. Now in China, you can give lectures to American EMBA/MBA students at home, which is the convenience brought by informatization.

After the epidemic in 2020, we can see that there are huge challenges from the aspects of government, society, people's livelihood services, etc. I always feel that our Chinese in terms of management, especially our central government's control of the epidemic is very effective.

In this context, we look at the impact of artificial intelligence and big data on the epidemic, especially in the aspects of medical health and remote work, and have indeed done a lot of work, and through new information technology to make our economy recover, enterprises have made a lot of contributions.

The manager needs to make information that is conducive to business decisions, how to screen this information? Includes basic information, productivity information, competitive information and scarce resource information.

From the perspective of management, especially after the informationization, in the 1980s, the Japanese attacked many labor-intensive industries in the United States, and the United States began to engage in information superhighways. From traditional agriculture to industry to information, information as a factor of production is very important.

Peter Drucker said that knowledge workers are mainly relying on knowledge in the 21st century, and it is a society of "human brain + computer". From this perspective, our entrepreneurs need to think about information technology.

Especially in the current era of big data and the era of mobile Internet, he has a more novel ability to integrate (integrate) resources. Each of us scholars, every entrepreneur, in addition to our own knowledge, master management, we must learn to integrate resources, integrate resources.

Now many scholars are studying the VUCA era, and indeed we are facing many challenges now, especially we are the era of economic globalization, information networking, knowledge socialization, population urbanization, and electronic currency, we face many challenges, and our management does face various challenges, the complexity, dynamicness, and ambiguity of management. From this perspective, we need to change our thinking. Especially now the development of our artificial intelligence, the development is very fast.

In the post-epidemic era, with the acceleration of digital transformation, the integration of digital and physical, technology is more people-oriented. This is the question of how Peter Drucker will deal with the impact of new information technologies on humanity in the future 21st century and how we will proceed.

02 Self-management

Peter Drucker specifically talks about self-management in this book, the epidemic is coming, everyone works from home, online learning, how we manage ourselves. And now I think it's the Workshop, the Mechanical Industry Press, I think it's very good to launch a series of books managed by Peter Drucker, and I hope that our entrepreneurs, our scholars, really read some books. Peter Drucker spoke specifically of "managing oneself as another revolution in human affairs." ”

Recently, Nanjing University asked each of us to record a video for new students, and I specifically talked about this issue, the problem of self-management.

As a manager, I used to put forward the need to have "four senses", knowledge, insight, courage, consensus, and put forward the "four highs" for our employees, that is, high quality, high positivity, high enthusiasm, high collaboration, and high self-discipline.

From this point of view, each of us must learn to understand ourselves, because self-management must first understand ourselves, who I am, what I want to do, what the environment supports me to do, and what I can do in my future career.

Who is Peter Drucker talking about? What are my strengths and how can I play them? What are my values? How do I position myself and what can I contribute? What responsibilities and relationships do I have. These are the five aspects of Peter Drucker's self-management.

In addition to knowing ourselves, we need to care for others.

Kazuo Inamori emphasizes altruism: first think about others, think about problems from the perspective of others, and then your career will become bigger. You only think about yourself, sorry, people don't cooperate with you.

Caring for others also makes people happy. What is happiness and how can people live long?

Relationships are important, for example, family relationships, social relationships, friendship relationships, classmate relationships. Kazuo Inamori wrote a book called "Kumba", which is to drink and chat with employees when he is usually free. I think that in the unit, after drinking, he will tell you everything, you open your heart, and people will tell you. That's what we're talking about caring for others.

Peter Drucker: The Management Challenges of the 21st Century

03 Knowledge workers

This is one of the six issues that Peter Drucker specifically addressed in "Management Challenges in the 21st Century", the problem of productivity of knowledge workers. He devoted himself to the ability of knowledge productivity and the development and management of knowledge productivity.

Peter Drucker said that the most important and outstanding contribution of management in the 21st century is to increase the productivity of manual labor by as much as 50 times in manufacturing.

Equally important contributions that management can make in the 21st century is the need to increase knowledge work and the productivity of knowledge workers.

Productivity of the Knowledge Worker He talked about six elements, what the task is, and how to contribute. Autonomy in managing one's own productivity, constant innovation, continuous self-learning, and continuous teaching to others are paramount, and knowledge workers must be seen as capital, not as costs.

Why do we talk about human resources, consider people as resources, as capital, as assets. Man is a living resource, other resources are dead resources, and other dead resources must be revitalized through living people. All developed countries spend almost 20 per cent of their gross national product on the production and dissemination of knowledge. I think that knowledge education and training require a lot of investment and effective management of knowledge workers.

Peter Drucker predicted that over the past hundred years, the leading countries would have been led by the United States, followed by Japan and Germany, the first to increase the productivity of manual workers.

From now on, in the next 50 years, and perhaps not for long, economic leadership on the world stage will shift to the most systematic and successful productivity of knowledge workers.

04 Final words

In the book "Management Challenges in the 21st Century", Peter Drucker talked about six issues, and I also talked about three issues today, one is the emerging information technology, the second is self-management, and the third is the knowledge worker, knowledge work.

In the wake of pandemics, information technology will change the way we work and live. We must learn self-management, self-learning, learning is a kind of continuous education, continuing education, lifelong education.

I'll share it with you, thank you very much!
