Dayu Zhishui is a familiar historical story. Yu was the son of Cang, whose character was Gaomi, and was said to have been born in Qiang (present-day Gansu and Qinghai). His father, The Carp, managed the flood by damming with stones and mud to block the water, and as a result, the people were injured and nothing was achieved. After Cang was deposed, Yu was ordered to control the flood, and he left home to cure the water after four days of marriage. Dayu learned from his father's failure to control water, and tried to overcome public opinion and change the blockage to neglect.

He led a group of loyal assistants, climbed mountains and waded through water, braved the wind and rain, experienced countless risks, footprints all over the land of Kyushu, fought for thirteen years, and did not enter the house three times. In the end, the flood was filled in, the river channel was dredged, and victory was won.

After Shun's death, Dayu officially became the leader of the tribal alliance and the beginning of the Xia Dynasty, which was the first monarch of the Xia Dynasty. He ordered that the copper contributed by the various tribes be cast into nine large dings, symbolizing Kyushu. These nine dings later became a symbol of state power.
