Guan Xuejun's column | a declaration of the jaguar

author:Guan teacher

The jaguar never hunts silently, always looks at the prey, and then approaches a little closer, quietly enters the best attack distance, suddenly launches an attack, and in one fell swoop, the prey is held in the mouth, silently announcing the victory of the jaguar.

In the car ring, the Jaguar brand is very much like the jaguar, noble, niche, at the top of the biological chain. As far as Jaguar's actions in the market are concerned, it also has the style of Jaguar - never speaking out, even until the product is delivered to the user, and you never know how good the car is without test driving. At the beginning of June, automotive media from all over the country were invited to Portugal to test drive the Jaguar pure electric vehicle I-PACE EV400, and all those who initially disagreed with Jaguar electric vehicles were shocked.

Speaking of high-end electric vehicles, the first thing that comes to mind is Tesla, because Americans are too good at it - the price of more than one million cars, although the performance of the curve has not been praised by the industry, but still flaunted with good acceleration; although the car is roughly built, there is an electronic touch screen like an i-PAD... Of course, there is also the unique job of catching fire after a fierce collision, and the car was actually sent into space. Jaguar, by contrast, isn't as vocal and doesn't seem to have as much money to advertise in space. As the electric vehicle market matured, jaguar quietly unveiled its masterpiece, the I-PACE EV400, when the world seemed to be using Tesla as a benchmark for pure electric vehicles.

Although the price of the I-PACE EV400 is only about half of Tesla's, the level of craftsmanship is far beyond Tesla, which well interprets the relationship between price and value, sitting in the car, it is like staying in a luxury hotel, making people feel high-end, luxurious, practical, comfortable and not ostentatious. If you look at Tesla with the I-PACE EV400 as a benchmark, it is like making the British gentleman stand with the cowboys of the American West.

Some may think that this evaluation is too extreme. When you start the I-PACE EV400, you'll find that although the I-PACE EV400 is an SUV, it can be on the F-1 track. Before entering the famous Algarve circuit in Portugal, everyone lowered the chassis height of the I-PACE EV400, and then entered the track sequentially, accelerated, slowed down to the corner, close to the center of the bend, accelerated, and shot the electric door to the end, a series of actions. Interestingly, a group of Chinese "car maniacs" ran on the track, whether it was a slow bend or a turnaround, and did not hear the movement of the ringing tire. It can be seen that Jaguar's engineers have made real efforts in the chassis design and tuning of the I-PACE EV400, after all, there is a heavy layer of batteries under the body, and the centrifugal force when steering far exceeds that of traditional powered cars. But its disadvantages are also advantages, precisely because the battery is centered and the engine is eliminated, so that the center of gravity of the I-PACE EV400 is really located in the center of the car. Even so, overcoming the extremely large centrifugal force still posed a huge challenge to the tuning of the chassis, and Jaguar engineers gave the perfect answer. Of course, if you compare the curve performance of the I-PACE EV400 with tesla that can only show off with straight-line acceleration, some people may say that Jaguar is bullying people - an old cannon who has played in the car circle for more than 90 years, bullying a post-00s.

It wasn't just the I-PACE EV400's track performance that took a big surprise, following the GPS-set route, we came to a small river, and the vehicle first went up the river and then up the hill. Before wading, under the guidance of technicians, all vehicles raised the chassis. The river wasn't deep, but it was past the wheels, and none of the I-PACE EV400s had a circuit problem. Such a bold test drive over the water, Jaguar set a precedent, but also let people witness the reliability of the I-PACE EV400.

Even more challenging is the climb, the I-PACE EV400 has to climb a steep slope of several hundred meters. Before going uphill, all vehicles are adjusted to off-road mode, and then the I-PACE EV400 rushes to the top of the slope one by one, and at the steepest point, the front of the vehicle is raised upwards, and the driver can no longer see the road. With a tuft of loess lifted, all the vehicles reached the top safely, although some reporters had not driven the mountain road before. Jaguar's engineers didn't describe whether the I-PACE EV400 was an off-road or an urban SUV, but without full-time all-wheel drive technology driven by front and rear motors, such off-road capabilities would be unthinkable. If you take a Tesla worth the equivalent of two I-PACE EV400s to cross the river and climb the mountain, what will be the scene in front of people's eyes?

This test drive is undoubtedly a communication activity of Jaguar's products and brands, and behind it reflects the confrontation between the two behavior concepts of traditional car companies and "new forces". From the perspective of the automotive industry, Tesla's technology is really nothing remarkable, but its hype is successful, and the sign of success is that it has reached a large amount of money, and its market value has surpassed General Motors at the highest. Traditional car companies first look at the market trend, optimistic about the market trend and then find a market segment suitable for their own brand, and then from the three dimensions of technology, price, consumer demand, to define and develop the most competitive models. And all of this happens silently, like a jaguar quietly approaching its prey, only after the release of the new car does the opponent realize that the original advantage has been lost. Although Tesla has a lot of money, because it despises automobile manufacturing, it eventually affects the release of production capacity because the basic process is not passed, which eventually leads to the failure of the profit model. The traditional car companies are not the same, they are at the beginning of entering a certain market to think of a stable, in line with their own identity, sustainable profit model, the basis of all planning is not based on the amount of money as a premise, but based on their own resource endowments.

Such a successful I-PACE EV400 shows not only the performance of Jaguar pure electric vehicles, but also represents the behavior concept of traditional car companies. Perhaps when electric cars are mentioned again, people will no longer think that Tesla, the electric car that does not dare to be flattered, is the benchmark. The reason why this article is titled "Jaguar's Declaration" is intended to show the stability and pragmatism of traditional car companies, in stark contrast to those who expect to speculate on money through a car project.
