Originally from Fenghua, Zhejiang, Tang Yueying was born in Shanghai in November 1934. When she was 15 years old, she studied under Xu Yulan, who appointed her to learn Hua Dan and was taught by the Kunqu Chuan dynasty. Until Xu Yulan's death in 2017, Tang Yueying became Xu Yulan's student for 69 years. During this period, Tang Yueying participated in many plays. For example, in the first version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" in 1958, she played Wang Xifeng, in the movie "Dream of the Red Chamber", she played Mandarin Duck, and in "Jade Hairpin" she played Madame Li.

Wang Xiuyue told Tianmu News that because Xu Yulan thought that Tang Yueying looked "big eyes and high nose", it was more suitable for Hua Dan than Xiaosheng, so she suggested that she study Hua Dan. "Although Tang Yueying is not singing Xu Pai Xiaosheng, her contribution to the Xu Pai inheritance exceeds many people."

Wang Xiuyue said that after Teacher Xu was old and his health was not very good, Tang Yueying silently dotted and worked behind his back, and did a lot of things for the Xu Pai inheritance. "For example, when I was transferred to the drama school to teach in February 2008, this is something that Teacher Xu is very concerned about, but she was not in good health at that time, and many times it was Sister Tang who cared for her.
