Biden has officially nominated The 78-year-old Nelson as NASA's new director and has submitted his nomination to the Senate.

Bill Nelson served as a member of the U.S. Democratic Congress from 2001 to 2019. In January 1986, he flew to space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, one of the few civilians to go to space.

He also chaired the U.S. House of Representatives Space Subcommittee for six years. He is now a member of NASA's Advisory Board.
