400 years ago, Li Shizhen not only helped Hubei deal with the plague, but also issued a warning to eat wild game

Since the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the prominent problem of indiscriminate consumption of wild animals and the huge hidden dangers posed by public health security have been widely concerned by all sectors of society. Today, China has officially banned the consumption of wild animals. In fact, as early as 400 years ago, Li Shizhen divided wild food into four categories in the "Compendium of Materia Medica" into four categories: "scales, beasts, birds (waterfowl), and insects", so as to warn everyone not to eat wild meat, so as not to get infected with diseases and avoid the spread of plague. In addition, at the age of 30, Li Shizhen also helped prevent and respond to plague in his hometown of Hubei.

Battle against the plague

Hubei Puchun, known as Puzhou in ancient times, has been famous doctors since the Song and Yuan Dynasties, with rich and colorful medical works, and is also the hometown of Li Shizhen, a famous Chinese medicine scholar of the Ming Dynasty who wrote China's ancient pharmaceutical masterpiece "Compendium of Materia Medica". The local tradition has always been that "the grass is medicine, and passers-by understand medicine", leaving behind the saying that "people go to the holy village to make pilgrimages to the holy town, and the medicine goes to Puzhou to see the strange".

Li Shizhen's father, Li Yanwen, was also a famous doctor in Puzhou and authored a variety of medical books such as "Notes on the Eight Pulses of Medicine". Li Shizhen has studied diligently since childhood and has a quick thinking. In 1531, he was admitted to Xiucai at the age of 14. During his early years of study, he developed a keen interest in medicine, consciously excerpting medically-related content from books such as the subset of the history of the Bible he had read, and had noticed the relationship between medicine and multidisciplinary disciplines in his reading. In 1540, at the age of 23, he abandoned his career as a doctor after failing the third township examination. In order to master more theoretical knowledge of medicine and become a good doctor who saves the world, he is even more extensive and reads hundreds of books on ancient and modern scriptures and history. The "Collection of Bai Maotang" said that he said: "Studying for ten years, not leaving the house, erudite and not looking at anything." The "Chronicle of Salary Prefecture" also says that he said: "Deliberately read books, do not leave the house for ten years, go up to the tomb code, and go down to the zi shi hundred families, and should not be ruled."

About the summer of the twenty-eighth year of Ming Jiajing (1549), Sichuan, Hunan, and Hubei began to rain heavily for days. The water level of the Yangtze River has soared, pouring into the Pu River, flooding large fields, collapsing houses, displacing many people and starving. After the water receded, and when the climate was hot, the heat of the sky, the moisture of the ground, the dampness and heat of steaming, the infectious disease soon spread, the coming force was fierce, and countless people died of illness. When Li Shizhen saw such a scene, he was really sad and compassionate. I thought to myself, "I studied medicine to cure the sick and save people, and now that so many people are sick, how can I stand idly by?" So he consulted with his father, asked him to go through his father's medicine box, and went out of the house to treat the patient.

Before this, Li Shizhen only accompanied his father, and although Li Yanwen knew that his medical skills were not bad, he was always uneasy and did not let him diagnose and treat patients alone. Now Li Shizhen is practicing medicine alone, diagnosing and treating diseases very carefully, and does not dare to be careless. Because of his solid roots and the guidance of Li Yanwen, who is a skilled medical doctor, many patients were quickly cured after his treatment. He personally gave medicine to the victims and taught them how to prevent and deal with small diseases and the greatest plagues. It was also in this battle with the plague that Li Shizhen achieved the status of his generation of medical saints.

Plagues are infectious diseases caused by some strongly pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses. Most of the plagues recorded in the history books are caused by environmental health problems, so people's living health problems are naturally people's livelihood issues that cannot be ignored, and living health has become an important focus of Traditional Chinese medicine to prevent and treat diseases. Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica" records many symptomatic Chinese herbal remedies about the plague. When it comes to living health, the most interesting thing is a home remedy by Li Shizhen in the "Compendium of Materia Medica", which reads: "The stable has a mother monkey and can avoid the plague." This means that if monkeys are placed in the stables, the plague of horses can be avoided. Obviously, Li Shizhen is not only concerned with the living health of human beings, but also the living health of the entire human living environment.

Li Shizhen believes that doctors should not only talk about the tao of medicine, but also teach people the way of disease prevention, and the steam disinfection method he pioneered to prevent plague, ice cubes to cool down and other ways of preventing and treating diseases has been widely spread in the world, which has promoted the spread of traditional Chinese medicine health culture among the people.

As a promising doctor, how to pass on his characteristic diagnosis and treatment technology and medical experience to future generations is the best way to make a statement. In addition to the Compendium of Materia Medica, Li Shizhen has also compiled, edited and written 11 kinds of medical works, including "The Study of the Pulse of the Lake", "The Eight Pulses of the Qijing", "The Difficulty of SanjiaoKe", "The Examination of the Fate Gate", "The Theory of the Five Viscera", "The Case of the Doctor of the Lake of the Lake", "The Theory of Heavenly Shame", "The Four Words of Pulse Science to Read", "The Poetry of the Rare Pulse of the Li Linhu Clan", "Pox Department" and so on. Unfortunately, except for works such as the Compendium of Materia Medica, the Genealogy of the Lake, and the Eight Pulses of the Qijing, which are still alive in the present world, the other works are basically dead.

Li Shizhen's masterpiece "Compendium of Materia Medica", based on the Song Dynasty's "Evidence Class Materia Medica", lasted 27 years, and the draft was three easy. The book is divided into 52 volumes and contains about 1.9 million words. There are 1892 kinds of drugs, 11096 prescriptions, and 1109 drug figures. It collects and sorts out 1518 kinds of Materia Medica and 374 new drugs, and collects 2936 prescriptions of past generations and 8160 new prescriptions. New drugs and prescriptions are more Materia Medica in the past.

Nowadays, we are concerned about the fact that wild animal meat contains a large number of viruses and is easy to get diseases when eaten, Li Shizhen has long been clearly recorded in the "Compendium of Materia Medica". For example: "the birds are poisonous", "all birds do not close their eyes from death, do not stretch their feet from death, white birds have their heads, white heads, three feet, four distances, six fingers, four wings, alien shapes, are inedible, and kill people when they eat"; scaly carp (pangolin): "Salty, cold, poisonous, its flesh is sweet, astringent, sour, chronic diarrhea after eating, and then panic fanaticism"; peacock meat tastes salty, cool, and has a small poison, and those who eat their flesh will take medicine from then on; Mandarin ducks, although good-looking, but like peacocks, "meat taste salty, cool, and have small poisons", and even more terrible is the headache after eating Mustangs can become "bitter, bitter, cold, and poisonous meat", and eating more will "produce sores and diarrhea".

Many people today, in order to satisfy their appetites and pursue vanity, completely ignore the warnings of their predecessors.

In fact, to protect wild animals is to protect human beings themselves.

May people abandon the bad habit of eating wild meat and let fasting wild meat become the moral consciousness of the whole people! (Reader's daily client reporter He Jian sorted)
