Principal looks at the "double subtraction" | Principal Kang Yongbang of HKUST Affiliated Primary School: Why can't physical education be the first subject?

Exercise achieves health, health achieves dreams, and I always believe that children who love sports will have a better future. It is hoped that the "double reduction" will reduce the academic burden, let students fall in love with and enjoy sports, and let the sportsmanship and physical ability feed back to the learning of other courses, so as to develop the habit of lifelong exercise.

——Kang Yongbang, principal of the Experimental Primary School Affiliated to the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China

As one of the nine "double reduction" pilot cities in the country, in late September, Chengdu's "double reduction" plan was announced. How should parents view the signals revealed by the "double reduction" policy? How do Chengdu principals view the "double reduction" policy? How will schools implement this?

In the view of Kang Yongbang, a special teacher of mathematics in primary schools in Sichuan Province and the principal of the Experimental Primary School Affiliated to the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (hereinafter referred to as "HKUST Affiliated Elementary School"), the implementation of the "double reduction" policy is to return education to the essence, but also to fully respect the law of children's physical and mental development, and strive to improve students' physique, emotional intelligence and comprehensive ability.

Kang Yongbang said that in the Chengdu "double reduction" plan, he is most concerned about the healthy growth of students. Because the implementation of the "double reduction" represents the return of health to the child, and the emphasis on sports will help to better implement the "double reduction", so that the child's health is better, the emotional intelligence is higher, and the learning ability is stronger. "With more time, children can participate in sports, which can avoid addicting to mobile phones, but also enhance appetite, improve sleep, develop intelligence, and thus improve children's physical fitness."

As far as the specific implementation measures of HKUST Affiliated Primary School are concerned, Kang Yongbang introduced that the school has issued "three lists" for "five management" and "double reduction", and at the same time issued instructions for teachers, students and parents, and bound them into books for use in schools. Through this kind of "small incision", we can do a good job in major reforms and ensure that the "double reduction" work is better implemented and perfected.

Taking physical education as an example, HKUST has taken the physical education reform as a breakthrough, taking student health as the first criterion for evaluating the quality of education, and achieving the "three ones": that is, one physical education class per day per class (implemented since 2014), one hour of class breaks every day, and one physical exercise after class every afternoon. "At present, there are a total of 52 physical education teachers in the school, and the 5 campuses are equipped with a total of 829 table tennis tables, which can fully ensure that students exercise (including recess activities) for 3 hours a day, so that students can enjoy fun, enhance physical fitness, improve personality, and temper their will during physical exercise." Kang Yongbang said.

Kang Yongbang said that "physical education is the best education, and physical education is the first discipline" has now become the consensus of teachers and students in the school. Dolls have more physical exercise time, and there will be more obvious changes. For example, the school graduated this year with 840 students in 18 classes, with an average height of 155.65 centimeters, and the highest class even reached 158.45 centimeters.

It is worth mentioning that Hu Haotian, the only candidate in the province who was admitted to the junior class of the University of Science and Technology of China, attended the primary school and was attached to the Electronic Science University. In addition, the school also had a student Wang Yixiao admitted to the junior class of the University of Science and Technology of China last year. "Exercise achieves health, health achieves dreams, and I always believe that children who love sports will have a better future, which is also the positive significance brought by 'double subtraction'." Kang Yongbang said.

For the later implementation of the plan, Kang Yongbang mentioned that strengthening the transformation of non-subject teachers into general teachers and carrying out art and sports training on weekends will become the focus of the school's future work. "Reducing the academic burden, hoping to make students fall in love with and enjoy sports, so that sportsmanship and physical ability can feed back into the study of other courses, so as to develop the habit of lifelong exercise."
