China Youth Daily Client News (intern Chen Huiqi, China Youth Daily, China Youth Network reporter Hu Ning) has big ears, alert eyes, slender limbs, yellow fluff covered with black spots, body length of nearly one meter, looks "like a small leopard." On September 2, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping, with the assistance of animal protection societies, officially rescued such a serval cat.

Serval cats are widely distributed in the steppes of west, central and eastern Africa, and are alien species in China. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which China has acceded to, the serval cat has been approved as a national second-level key protected animal for protection and management. The reporter learned from the Municipal Landscaping Bureau that at present, the serval cat has been sent to the Beijing Wild Animal Park Rescue Station in Daxing District for professional treatment, and its vital signs are stable.

Deng Wenhong, a professor at the School of Life Sciences of Beijing Normal University, introduced that the serval cat appears in Beijing through human reasons, and if a population of a certain scale is formed, it will definitely affect other cats in Beijing such as ocelots. In China, the problem of invasion of alien species is quite serious, at present, more than 400 species of animals and plants in China are invasive species.

After receiving the capture of the serval cat, the Beijing Municipal Landscaping Bureau urgently verified the existence of the serval cat in the city's wildlife breeding and utilization units, and no serval cat escape occurred. Zhang Zhiming, director of the Wildlife and Wetland Protection Division of the Municipal Landscaping Bureau, told reporters that the serval cat found in the wild may have escaped without approval, been abandoned, or was "released" in the wild without authorization.

At the aid station, the veterinarian first examined the serval cat for feline diseases and found no abnormalities. Because of the switching environment, the serval cat develops stressful behavior two days ago. On the third day, the serval cat began to feed. The staff took various foods to try and found that the serval cat did not eat the complete rabbit legs, but after chopping the rabbit legs, it began to eat.

Hu Yan, deputy director of the Beijing Wildlife Rescue Center, pointed out that "this is because in the process of being raised by private individuals, wild animals have accumulated a variety of different habits, and their eating habits will be different from those in the wild." "Therefore, this also proves that the serval cat should have been bred privately."

A few days ago, Hu Yan saw that the serval cat began to stretch its waist. He said: "Animals have this behavior is more adapted to the environment. The current state of the serval cat is completely normal. ”

Since the beginning of this year, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping has received 2384 wild animals from 227 species for rescue. In recent years, the number of exotic species rescued in Beijing has increased, not only the serval cat, but also cobras, lizards and turtles from Africa, which are alien species that are unlikely to have a natural distribution in Beijing, but have often been seen in rescue in recent years. Zhang Zhiming, director of the Wildlife and Wetland Protection Division of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping, said that this is related to the popular "exotic pet" breeding.

He said that the number of abandoned, lost, confiscated by law enforcement agencies and various types of "exotic pets" voluntarily sent by citizens in Beijing has increased year by year, including many exotic species, especially since this year, the number of alien species receiving rescue has accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total number of rescues received, occupying a large number of human and material resources of ambulance units.

As for how the rescued serval cat will be handled, Hu Yan introduced that according to international conventions, the serval cat will not be returned to the African origin, and display and scientific education are the main disposal methods for foreign species at present.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping and Landscaping issued a reminder that with the arrival of the migratory bird migration period in autumn and winter, the city will further strengthen field patrols and guards for the main distribution areas of wild animals, wintering grounds, breeding grounds, migration stops, migration and flight channels and other wildlife cluster activity areas, and strictly prevent illegal acts such as indiscriminate hunting and destruction of migratory birds and other wild animal habitats by increasing personnel strength, increasing monitoring equipment, strengthening publicity and guidance. Here, we also call on citizens and friends not to raise "exotic pets" at will, and to jointly establish the ecological and environmental awareness of wild animals that "do not contact, do not disturb, and do not harm", and report to the competent department of wildlife in a timely manner if they find wild animals injured.
