Zhangjiajie, 27 Oct (Xinhua) -- On the morning of 25 October, the Zhangjiajie City Intermediate People's Court held a press conference on the special trial activities to combat drug crimes, informing the news media and all sectors of society of the relevant situation of the city's courts in carrying out special trial activities to combat drug crimes, and releasing typical cases. The press conference was presided over by Chen Ming, president of the First Criminal Trial Division of the Zhangjiajie Intermediate People's Court.
At the meeting, Zhong Qiang, president of the Second Criminal Trial Division of the Zhangjiajie Intermediate People's Court, gave a briefing on the trial work of drug cases in the city's courts, the new characteristics of drug cases, and the main practices of the city's courts in cracking down on drug cases. Tu Mingzhu, vice president of the First Criminal Division, released 4 typical cases of drug crimes.
Since the beginning of this year, the city's courts have concluded 91 cases of drug crimes and 121 people in the first instance. Among them, 50 people were sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of more than 5 years, life imprisonment to death, and the heavy sentence rate was 19%, which played an important role in combating and preventing drug crimes and curbing the development and spread of drug crimes. Recently, the two levels of courts in the city have successively held a centralized sentencing conference on drug cases and publicly pronounced judgments on 4 drug crime cases, demonstrating the strong determination and firm position of the people's courts to severely punish drug crimes.
In recent years, the city's courts have given full play to their adjudication functions, adhered to the principle of severe punishment according to law and the criminal policy of blending leniency with severity, focused on cracking down on smuggling, drug manufacturing, bulk drug trafficking, and other crimes at the source, actively participated in the comprehensive management of narcotics control, and effectively brought into play the role of punishment, warning, and deterrence of criminal punishment. In view of the weak links found in the trial of drug crimes, 2 judicial suggestions were sent to relevant departments to help plug management loopholes. Establish and complete a system of helping and educating anti-narcotics targets, build anti-narcotics coordination mechanisms with communities, schools, and groups, solidly carry out live trial broadcasts, public pronouncements, anti-narcotics lectures, and other such activities, realize the normalization of anti-narcotics publicity work, boost the in-depth development of the anti-narcotics people's war, and provide powerful judicial services and guarantees for comprehensive and in-depth promotion of anti-narcotics work.
