Qatari Emir Tamim met with Wang Yi: opposes the politicization of sports and supports Beijing's hosting of the Winter Olympics

Beijing, 27 Oct (China News Service) -- On October 26, local time, Qatari Emir Tamim met with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Doha.

Wang Yi first conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings and good wishes to Tamim. Wang Yi said that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Qatar relations have continued to develop healthily and steadily. China has always maintained that all countries, large and small, are equal, and that all civilizations respect each other, learn from each other and develop together. China firmly supports Qatar in exploring a development path that suits its own national conditions and opposes interference in Qatar's internal affairs by any force. We appreciate Qatar's fairness in international affairs, understand and support China's legitimate position, and are willing to strengthen strategic coordination with Qatar, jointly safeguard multilateralism, oppose unilateralism, and promote the construction of a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind.

Wang Yi said that the economies of China and Qatar are highly complementary, and the pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, infrastructure, equipment manufacturing, industrial parks and other fields has been continuously expanded, bringing great benefits to both sides. The Chinese side is willing to continue to carry out all-round and strategic cooperation with the Qatari side to help the Qatar accelerate the road of economic diversification and enhance its ability to develop independently. The Chinese side is willing to expand mutual investment with the Qatari side, welcomes the Qatari side to actively participate in China's high-level opening up, and makes good use of China's super-large-scale market opportunities.

Wang Yi said that a few days ago, President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech on China's democratic politics, comprehensively explaining the rich connotation, theoretical foundation and practical functions of people's democracy in the whole process of China. Democracy is the universal value of all mankind, and the true meaning of realizing democracy is to respond to the needs of the people in combination with their own national conditions. Democracy is not the preserve of any country, and individual countries use their own criteria to judge whether other countries are democratic or not, which is itself undemocratic. Tamim asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping. The two sides exchanged views on mutual support for each other's countries in hosting the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Doha World Cup. Tamim thanked the Chinese enterprises for building the main venue for the World Cup finals as scheduled, saying that the Qatari side opposes the politicization of sports, supports Beijing's hosting of the Winter Olympic Games, and believes that the Beijing Winter Olympics will be as wonderful and successful as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

On the same day, Wang Yi also held talks with Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed.
