Du Pengcheng, a native of Hancheng, Shaanxi, was born in 1921. From 1934 to 1936, Du Pengcheng was recommended by someone to transfer to a rural school 20 or 30 miles away from home.

In 1938, he joined the revolution and went to Yan'an, where he successively entered the branch of the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University and the Lu Xun Normal College. In 1942, he entered Yan'an University and studied for nearly four years. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1945. In 1947, he served as a reporter for the Xinhua News Agency, participated in the famous Yan'an Defense War, and moved to the Great Northwest. Wrote a lot of newsletters and close-ups.

After 1949, Du Pengcheng successively served as the director of the Xinjiang branch of Xinhua News Agency, the vice chairman of the Shaanxi Writers Association, the vice chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, a professional writer, and joined the Chinese Writers Association in 1955, the second, third and fourth directors of the Chinese Writers Association, and the fourth member of the China Federation of Literary and Literary Associations. In 1982, Du Pengcheng was elected as a deputy to the 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and he was also a member of the Second and Third National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Du Pengcheng began to publish works in the 1940s and achieved remarkable achievements in the creation of long, medium and short stories. The novel "Defending Yan'an" published in 1954 is his masterpiece, and is China's first large-scale positive depiction of the Liberation War, which artistically reproduces the whole process of the Yan'an Defense War, and successfully shapes the glorious image of the proletarian revolutionary Peng Dehuai and a group of heroic portraits such as Zhou Dayong and Li Cheng.

On October 26, 1991, he died in Xi'an due to illness at the age of 70.
