*8 A Dark House

The dwarfs stepped( /stept/ v. tread; walking (step of the past)) out of the mine.

Dar wiped( /waɪpt/ vt. Rub (wipe of the past)) his forehead(/ˈfɔːhed/ n. forehead). "Whew( /hwjuː/ Yo, Oh)!"

Mar rubbed( /rʌbd/ v. rub (rub's past tense)) his belly(/ˈbeli/n. abdomen; stomach).

"I hope Snow White made a hot dinner."

"Snow White is wonderful," Par said.

"Why was the queen so nasty( /ˈnɑːsti/ adj. Extremely poor; disgusting; malicious) to her?

I don't understand."

Gar bit his lip. "I never liked the new queen."

Zar nodded. "She's awful( /ˈɔːfl/ adj. Terrible; extremely bad)."

"The worst," Yar said.

A tear fell from Star's eye.

Dar patted( /ˈpætɪd/ v. tap, pat's past tense) Star on the shoulder( /ˈʃəʊldə/ n. shoulder, shoulder).

"Don't worry, Star.

Snow White is safe(/seɪf/ adj. 安全的) with us."

The dwarfs sang as they walked.

But when they got home, the house was dark.

"There's no fire(/ˈfaɪə/ n. 火)," Dar said.

Mar sniffed(/snɪft/v. inhale, sniff's past tense). "I don't smell(/smel/v. sniff, smell) dinner."

"Uh-oh!" The dwarfs rushed( /rʌʃt/ v. 奔;闯(rush的过去式)) into the house.

They gasped(/ɡɑːspt/ vi. Take a breath).

Snow White lay( /leɪ/ v. lie; located in (lie's past tense)) on the floor.

"She's not breathing(/ˈbriːðɪŋ/v. breathe)!" Par said.

"Get that coat off of her!" Gar said.

Zar and Yar ped(/rɪpt/v. rip; rip; rip; rip, rip's past tense) (rip off) the coat's buttons( /ˈbʌtnz/ n. buttons (plural form of button)).

Star yanked( /jæŋkt/ vi. Jerk pull, yank's past tense) at the sleeves( /sliːvz/ n. sleeves (the plural form of the sleeve)).

Snow White was free( /friː/ adj. Free)!

She opened her eyes. "Oh!

I'm so happy to see you all!"

"What happened?" Dar asked.

Snow White told them about the old woman.

"It (must be (speculation about the past)) the queen!" Dar said.

Meanwhile the queen stood before(=in front of) her mirror.

"My Lady," the mirror said.

"Snow White is still alive(/əˈlaɪv/ adj. 活着的)—and still beautiful."

The queen screamed( /skriːmd/ shriek (scream of the past)).
