With the passage of time, many traditional snacks are now rare to see, and now there is a chance to see them again, instantly evoking the memories of the old times in my mind.

Once upon a time, there were many kinds of fried fruits in Taihe County. Such as fritters, spoon rice fruits, cakes, eggplant rice fruits, pumpkin rice fruits, winter melon rice fruits, fried peppers, pickled rice fruits, etc., as well as potato bun fish, leek pancakes, it is really a variety of names, too many to list. Among them, I especially remember the spoon of rice nuts.

The snack, named after the tool used to make it, is a shallow flat-bottomed iron spoon with a diameter of 8 to 9 centimeters with a long handle on the side. Pour the thick sticky rice flour batter evenly into an iron spoon, then place the fillings such as sauerkraut or carrots and pumpkin shredded grains in the center, sprinkle a layer of pulp and green onion on top, and then fry them in a frying pan until golden brown.

Spoon rice nuts are bright in color, crisp and delicious, and are suitable for all ages.

In the 1970s, I worked in a state-owned factory on Ximen Street in Taihe County. A grandfather who lives near the house uses a board cart to push the stove and the board to fiddle with the spoon rice and fruit stall at the entrance of the factory every day, and the smell is tempting. Spoons of rice were so cheap, only five cents each, and were popular with those of us who were young workers who had just started working and had low wages. As soon as the bell rang, my co-workers and I rushed out to the stall and each bought a few freshly oiled pots and golden rice fruits to feast on.

"Her fried spoon rice fruit is exquisite, large, bright color, good taste, so her popularity and business are particularly good, the days are long, people are jokingly called her "fat rice fruit sister-in-law".

Decades have passed, and the uncle and lady who fried the spoon of rice nuts have gone, and the things have passed away. Now I smell the fruity aroma of spoon rice, although the taste is not exactly the same, it is still evocative. For the variety of snacks that you can often eat in the early years, each one is actually very simple. Now it seems that it is full of retro flavor.
