—Remembering my college teachers

Wen | Jiang Tong

Qingdao's Baguan Mountain is located on the campus of Ocean University of China on Yushan Road, which was the site of Shandong University in the 1950s. The history department of Shandong University enjoyed a high reputation in China at that time, which was inseparable from the joint teaching of the famous eight history professors. On March 19, 2014, Mr. Xu Zhijie, a historian today, published an article entitled "Eight Horses and The Same Groove" in the "Qilu Humanities" edition of the Qilu Evening News, which detailed the grand situation of the eight professors teaching together in the History Department of Shandong University in the 1950s. Yang Xiangkui, head of the Department of History, and the eight professors are Tong Shuye, Zheng Hesheng, Huang Yunmei, Zhang Weihua, Wang Zhongxing, Zhao Lisheng, Wu Dakun, and Chen Tongxie.

I was admitted to the History Department of Shandong University in September 1957, and I had the privilege of listening to teachers such as Tong Shuye, Chen Tongxie, Zheng Hesheng, Huang Yunmei, and Wang Zhongjie.

<h2 toutiao-origin="h2" > children's book industry</h2>

The children's book industry was more than fifty years old, medium-sized, Lu Xun-style inch head, but for a long time there was no haircut, and under the long unkempt hair was a beard, a very untrimmed look. He always wore an old blue Zhongshan suit, stood on the podium speaking loud Southern Mandarin, and looked in one direction with his eyes hooked, without a smile on his face. He never took a lesson plan in class, did not use chalk, lit a cigarette before the lecture, smoked a cigarette in the lecture, and at the end of a class, a pack of cigarettes was almost finished. Students do not need to wipe the blackboard between classes, and it takes a lot of effort to clean the cigarette butts and soot.

Professor Tong Shuye told us about the ancient history of the Orient, starting from the development process of civilization in the euphrates and Tiglis rivers. Mr. Tong's boring history is fascinating, and the students worship him to the ground. Mr. Tong disagreed with the contents of the Soviet historian Avchiev's "History of the Ancient Orient", and he explained that his views contrary to Mr. "A" were correct, which was rare in the fifties when he studied everything from the Big Brother of the Soviet Union.

Because of the worship of Teacher Tong, we students feel new about everything that happens to Teacher Tong. Teacher Tong is famous for not trimming the edges in his life, once he and his wife went to a movie theater on Qingdao Zhongshang Road, and the wife checked in the ticket, but the ticket inspector stopped Teacher Tong, claiming that those who were not neatly dressed were not allowed to enter. His wife found that her husband was not around, but there was a quarrel behind her, so she went back to explain to the people, so that the couple could watch the movie together. Since then, Teacher Tong has vowed never to enter the cinema again.

Teacher Tong has no academic qualifications and belongs to self-taught people. He became an assistant to the famous scholar Gu Jiegang and published many influential articles in academic journals. Of course, Teacher Tong's special experience is also engraved by some of his peers, because it is a common disease for literati to be light. Teacher Tong received more recognition from the academic community.

Fifty years after I graduated from college, I saw from Writer's Digest that li Lin's article signed by Book City magazine reproduced, telling the deep teacher-student friendship of the children's book industry for Gu Jiegang's respect, gratitude, and reward. In the early seventies of the last century, the children's book industry ended in depression in the "obsessive-compulsive concept disorder", and it was a decade of turmoil that ended his pitiful, pathetic, lamentable, and intelligent life.

I now think of the children's book teachers who are always sighing, how many intellectuals in that era had such an ending!

<h2 toutiao-origin="h2" > Chen Tongxie</h2>

My direct contact with Teacher Chen Tongxie was at the construction site of the Yuezikou Reservoir in Qingdao in the spring of 1958.

In March 1958, our teachers and classmates from Shandong University came to the Yuezikou Reservoir at the foot of Laoshan Mountain to participate in a week of voluntary labor. The red flag on the construction site was displayed, the crowd was crowded, and the enthusiasm for work was high. After the baptism of the "anti-rightist" and "double-anti" movements, people have thrown themselves into labor with a new look, and no one wants to be left behind in the political movement. Strong boys dug, loaded carts, and rammed, and female and female teachers, as well as old and weak male teachers and male classmates, carried baskets in plain clothes. Teacher Chen Tongxie was an old man in his 60s at the time, with gray hair and a pair of highly myopic glasses, and was the oldest old man on the construction site. I was the youngest in the class, tall and thin, and the political counselor in the department asked me and Teacher Chen to carry baskets and soil together. The task of our old and young teachers and students was to carry each basket of soil to the embankment 100 meters away.

Responsible for filling the frame with soil is a female teacher surnamed Lian, more than 20 years old, big eyes, medium, thin, and the appearance of a person is very kind. She tried to pack as little soil as possible for us every time, and sometimes carried it for Teacher Chen several times to let Teacher Chen rest for a while.

When Teacher Chen and I carried the basket, I was in the back and he was in the front. I always pull the basket rope to my side to reduce Teacher Chen's burden. At this time, Teacher Chen always said very politely, "Thank you!" "At this moment, an indescribable taste welled up in my heart! Teacher Chen is a few years older than my father, what if he were my father?

Labor promotes the evolution of human beings, labor creates the world, labor is sacred, and some people take labor as a punishment, so that an old man with no chicken power can bear the "nirvana" of labor transformation in the cold wind.

In addition to work, our teachers and students have also exchanged views. He said less, I asked more.

Mr. Chen was in the same class as Premier Zhou Enlai when he was studying at Nankai Middle School in Tianjin, and later Mr. Chen studied in Europe for more than ten years, was familiar with the five Chinese, and taught European history after returning to China.

Mr. Chen spoke softly and softly, in a Beijing tone. He asked me where my family was, who I was, which high school graduate, why I majored in history, and so on. And I asked him how he was related to Zhou Enlai in middle school. How is life in Europe? What is your favorite european language? Mr. Chen's answer was concise and concise, and some sensitive questions were euphemistically avoided, and I understand that he was afraid of being suspected of "admiring the foreign world". He said something I still don't forget, he told me, "London is like an old man, quaint and solemn." Paris is like a young girl, beautiful and romantic". I have lived in Jinan and Qingdao for most of my life, and I compare Jinan to Teacher Chen's London, and I compare Qingdao to Teacher Chen's Paris.

After a short week of labor, mr. Chen Tongxie and I met again the following year when he told us about the history of the world. In one unit exam, I scored 3 out of 5. Teacher Chen saw me and asked, "Jiang Jiguo, why did you get bad results in this exam?" ”

I replied, "I was charging on an iron blast furnace, and I was poisoned by carbon monoxide and was sick for three days. ”

He answered, as if he had many more things to say, but did not say a word. This is the last conversation I had with Teacher Chen, and I have not forgotten it so far!

<h2 toutiao-origin="h2" > Yellow Yunmei</h2>

Mr. Huang Yunmei is the oldest of our teachers, a native of Yuyao, Zhejiang, and a descendant of the thinker Huang Zongxi in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. He told us about the "Selected Ancient Texts", speaking a Jiangnan muttering, five of the first ten sentences could not be understood, and after a long time, they understood.

Teacher Huang lectured carefully and carefully, and king Wu's text, dozens of words, spoke for more than sixty hours. In his spare time, his classmates asked him this and that, and he always went out of his way to answer them carefully. He communicates with his classmates with passion and happiness.

Huang Zongxi opposed the absolute monarchy and the invasion of the Qing army, and was a pioneer in spreading democratic ideas. Mr. Huang Yunmei did not have any traces of rebellion, which may be related to the political atmosphere at that time!

<h2 toutiao-origin="h2" > Zheng Hesheng</h2>

Mr. Zheng Hesheng is a short old man with deep myopia eyes and teaches "Historical Bibliography". He was originally an academician of the School of Sociology during the Republic of China period and an authority on Chinese historical materials. Probably related to his experience, Teacher Zheng was cautious in his words and deeds, and the lectures only talked about the content of historical materials, and never played a role.

Teacher Zheng is also a southerner, his Mandarin is still standard, and the answers to students' questions are slow and clear, and he always has a smile on his face. Mr. Zheng's lecture notes were printed on a steel plate that he personally carved, and the handwriting of the handouts was neat and beautiful.

<h2 toutiao-origin="h2" > Wang Zhongji</h2>

Mr. Wang Zhongji, who was in his fifties at the time and a native of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, gave a lecture in a loud voice and clear words, and taught us the History of the Southern and Northern Dynasties of Wei and Jin. This period of history, which began in 220 AD to the sui dynasty to unify China in 589 AD, is the most complicated process in Chinese history, including the dispute between the Three Kingdoms at the end of the Han Dynasty, the rebellion of the Eight Kings of the Western Jin Dynasty, the Five Hu Chaos of China, the Sixteen Kingdoms of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the Great Integration of Nationalities. After escaping from the war and fleeing to Jiangnan, the literati of the northern country often gathered on the Yangtze River, drank and wrote poems, and expressed the sorrow of going to the country and nostalgia. Mr. Wang often improvised, chanting large passages of poems of the time, making us students who listened to the lectures seem to be immersed in the scene.

After ten years of turmoil, Mr. Wang served as the head of the Department of History at Shandong University. He was approved by the Ministry of Education in 1986 as a doctoral supervisor, but unfortunately he died in the same year!

In October 1958, Shandong University moved from Qingdao to Jinan, and I graduated in July 1961 to join the work force. During my studies in the History Department of Shandong University, I successively experienced the "Anti-Rightist Movement", "Double Anti-Movement", "Great Steel Refining", "Three Years of Disaster", etc. In this turbulent era, these teachers of mine still adhere to the upward management of learning and tirelessly teach people, so that I have the honor of succeeding in my studies under their influence.

Nearly sixty years later, I am also about to become an old man, and the voices and smiles of these old gentlemen still appear in front of me. He told us history, and they themselves made history, and may these teachers of mine walk well in heaven!

Note: The author Jiang Tong, former name, Jiang Jiguo, 82 years old, was a professor at a political science and law university in Shandong before retirement. In 1957, he was admitted to the History Department of Shandong University, and in October 1958, Shandong University moved from Qingdao to Jinan, and the author joined the work after graduating in July 1961.
