Original title: 65,000 hand-painted oil paintings resurrect van Gogh's legendary life, and every frame of this movie is a favorite
There are some words I don't know how to express,
In fact
I have no other way of expressing myself than to paint.

If you remember the list of literary and art films recommended by The Shanghai Film Festival, you will not forget this world's first oil painting animation feature film "Beloved Van Gogh".
After premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and receiving an audience vote, the film also won the Best Animation Award at the second stop of the Shanghai Film Festival. The director said at the post-screening meeting that there are plans for different language versions. The release date is still undecided, but a new trailer has recently been released.
To van Gogh's love
Loving Vincent (2017)
In this grandiose film, the starting point of everything is only the director's infinite love for Van Gogh.
Polish animation director Dorota Kobiela, who is also a painter, wanted to combine her love of painting and film at the age of 30. Suffering from depression for a long time, she read van Gogh's letters at the low point of her life, van Gogh also began to paint at the age of 29, and his belief inspired her and supported her to put this idea into practice.
The origin of the title of the film is also from Van Gogh's signature at the end of the letter:

Paintings tell the story of Van Gogh's inner world
Van Gogh's paintings were almost everywhere. We know from a young age that this painter who cut off his ears and has a brilliant color scheme has a tragic life that is diametrically opposed to painting. But few people know the real reason for his death.
Director Dorota Kobiela has a good partner, his husband Hugh Welchman. He is the founder of BreakThru Film Productions, and his most famous animated work, Peter & the Wolf, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
With a strictly forbidden attitude, they read all the biographies of Van Gogh that could be found on the market. Combined with Van Gogh's 800 personal letters, he tried to speculate on Van Gogh's psychological changes and restore the days before his death.
Self Portrait With Bandaged Ear,1889
"Vincent didn't pick up the brush until he was 29. He was unemployed four times, had no income, no wife, no children, he was the black sheep of the family, and life was desperate until he discovered the conviction of painting. Over the course of 8 years, through incredible passion and hard work, he became one of the most creative and influential painters in history. It's incredible.
It's easy to be overwhelmed by the sense of accomplishment that other people have achieved and put our own abilities in our place: blame it on geniuses like Mozart or Leonardo da Vinci, but Vincent proved that if you focus and put your energy into it, you can achieve extraordinary things, and it's never too late. But you have to be willing to put in the work. ”
Director Dorota Kobiela said in an interview.
Painters paint in the studio
As the first oil painting film, it was produced for more than six years. Production funding is one aspect of the problem, as there are no previous cases to prove that it has been successful. But most importantly, every frame in the film needs to be hand-drawn, which is very time-consuming.
To this end, they recruited painters from all over the world, and finally screened 125 professional oil painters and animators. Most of them are only good at one kind of painting or animation, and have to combine the two through rigorous training to adapt oil painting to animation. The team also produced special painting equipment for this purpose.
Van Plateau painting re-creation
Almost everyone who admires Van Gogh's paintings uses the term "flow" to describe it.
Indeed, Van Gogh's brushstrokes give the sense of movement extending beyond the canvas. But in filmmaking, in addition to the technical difficulties of turning hand-drawn drawings into animation, it is not easy to connect them. The painters modified or recreated many paintings on the basis of van Gabriel's works.
The Starry Night,1889
First of all, the peculiar perspective in Van Gogh's paintings is a test question. Yes, Van Gogh's perspective is wrong. It cannot be made according to the real perspective of what we see, but it is not random, and it needs to imitate Van Gogh's perspective.

According to the needs of the film's plot, the painter redesigned Van Gogh's room, and the perspective changes almost the same:

Secondly, van Gogh's paintings vary greatly in style before and after, so in the film, the same character may appear in the background of different painting styles. But in the end the film settled on Van Gogh's style around 1890.

Again, painting can be independent of the size of the canvas, but the film needs a uniform format. The creative team either enlarged or zoomed in on the original to recreate the work, or showed the complete painting by moving the lens such as panning the lens (such as Van Gogh's "Open Air Coffee Shop").
The final film uses a uniform size of 67cm*49cm.

Of course, for the sake of coherence in story time, the tone of the painting has also changed. Under the ingenuity of the painters, day turns to night, and winter and summer change freely. The color changes are based on Van Gogh's other paintings, so it seems to maintain Van Gogh's consistent style.

Of course, for scenes that do not appear in Van Gogh's paintings, the film uses a "flashback" approach, and uses black and white tones. In this regard, the director explained that "it may be too long for the audience to look at a 90-minute color-intensive painting", and the use of black and white tones is on the one hand to distinguish it from the original, and on the other hand, it is also in line with the photographic techniques of that era.
If you really like the paintings from the movies, congratulations on the chance to buy them home. Because the production process will continue to cover the paintings, only a small part of the 65,000 oil paintings have been preserved, and it is expected to tour the world to exhibit the paintings, and 200 works are also sold on the official website.

Gorgeous Caste interprets the characters in the painting
Since it is a drama film, it is indispensable to have characters. In order to restore Van Gogh's life, the production team almost searched for Van Gogh's portraits and some of the tiny characters in the paintings, and created more than 20 characters to connect the plot on this basis.
Regarding the shooting of the characters, the director explained that the production method was layered: the first layer, shooting the actors in the green screen; the second layer, converting to CG animation; and finally the painters brushed it out. The actors' makeup and styling are also highly restored, although it seems a bit secondary, the film's cast is still coveted.
Armand Roulin, played by Douglas Booth, is the main character. He was responsible for delivering letters between Van Gogh and his younger brother Theo. When he went to deliver a letter to Van Gogh, he found that Van Gogh had died, and from then on he began to visit Van Gogh's former friends and investigate the cause of Van Gogh's death.
He was the key to solving the mystery of Van Gogh's death.
Saoirse Ronan's appearance is surprising, she starred in "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "Atonement", "Lovely Bones" and is a likable young actress.
Silsa Ronan and James McVoy
There is also Aidan Turner, the most handsome archer in The Hobbit, as a boatman.
For example, Chris O'Dowd, who has starred in "IT Maniac", "Thor 2", and "Pirate Radio", plays a postman.
Jerome Flynn, we can see his familiar face in Game of Thrones, Ripper Street, Black Mirror.
As for Van Gogh himself, you may have seen kirk Douglas, Benedict Cumberbatch and many other versions of van Gogh. I would say that none of them are lucky to have actor Robert Gulaczyk, and Van Gogh, who "lived" from his paintings, will certainly not disappoint you.
Incidentally, the composer of the soundtrack for the film is the famous composer (Clint Mansell), "Requiem For a Dream", "Black Swan", "Death Code π" (Pi) are his works, in recent years, Jitterson starred in "Skyscraper" and the third season of the British drama "Black Mirror" is also composed by him.
The film ended with "Starry Starry Night", which brought countless people to tears. When the actor's smoke ring becomes Van Gogh's brushstrokes, when the bird bird flies over Van Gogh's last wheat field, the greatest painter makes this great oil painting film, and the love is so deep that it also spreads beyond the screen.
