Brazilian football legends Marta and Formiga made Olympic history in the opening match of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest female footballers of all time, Marta became the first player to score in five consecutive Olympic games after scoring in her country's 5-0 win over China.

The 35-year-old scored 111 international goals and was named FIFA World Player of the Year six times, starting the record in the 9th minute and then scoring a second in the 74th minute.

Marta celebrated with his teammates after scoring the team's first goal against China.

Marta's double mark means she now has 12 Olympic goals, her first in Athens in 2004 and now just two points away from the all-time record held by her compatriot Christian.

She's not the only Brazilian player to make history on Wednesday, though, as her 43-year-old teammate Formiga also made her own Olympic history. The São Paulo midfielder, who made 201 appearances for the national team, played 72 minutes against China, becoming the first female athlete to compete in seven Olympic Games. The 17-year-old made her Debut at the 1995 World Cup in Brazil and has competed in every Olympic since the women's team made its debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

It is worth mentioning that Formiga's Brazilian team played against the Chinese women's football team led by Sun Wen and Liu Ailing in the semi-finals of 1996, and 3:2, the Chinese women's football team eliminated Brazil to advance to the final, and finally won the Olympic silver medal.
