Mahler

Mahler's music is the summation and extreme of Romantic music. As he and Sibelius said in 1907, the symphony is the world, and it must be all-encompassing. All the elements of Romanticism—nature, mysticism, folklore, romantic literature, idealistic philosophy—are put to full use. In his place, complex orchestration, vocal and band combinations, varied timbres, huge bands, the ocean is wanton, magnificent, ups and downs, creating music that belongs to nature, the world and the universe. This music reflects his rich, vast, and innerly contradictory soul.

He had already shown his musical talents in childhood: he participated in piano competitions at the age of six; at the age of eight he was able to teach other children; at the age of fifteen he left the liberal arts school to study for three years at the Vienna Conservatory, where he received several awards for his outstanding grades; and at the age of nineteen he began his conducting and creative activities, having served as conductor at the opera houses in Prague (1885), Teubiiji (1886), Budapest (1888-1891), Hamburg (1891-1897) and Vienna (1897-1907). The Royal Opera in Vienna reached unprecedented levels during his tenure and enjoyed a first-class reputation at the time. He conducted the works of composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Verdi, Smetana and Puccini, all of which have their own unique features.
