On the afternoon of June 19, 2021, the symposium on "Master Yuanying and The Research on Overseas Dissemination in Recent Times" sponsored by the Fujian Provincial Yuanying Master Research Association was held at the Mingyang Zen Master Memorial Hall in Sanfang Qixiang, Fuzhou. The meeting was presided over by Professor Yan Zheng, former president of the Fujian Academy of Social Sciences, and made an opening speech by Master Fayun, vice president of the Fujian Buddhist Association and vice president of the Fujian Yuanying Master Research Association, and closing speech by Master Nature, executive vice president of the Fujian Buddhist Association and president of the Fujian Yuanying Master Research Association. Experts and scholars from Xiamen University, Fuzhou University, Fujian Normal University, Minnan Normal University, Fujian Academy of Social Sciences, Fujian Institute of Ethnic and Religious Culture, Fujian Kaiyuan Institute of Buddhist Culture, Fujian Provincial Technical Education Center, Zhangzhou Hehe Ecological Research Institute and other units attended the meeting.
Master Fayun said that when we study Master Yuanying, we must enlarge his noble virtues, bear in mind the spirit of the master's patriotism and love of religion, take the road of sinification of contemporary Buddhism, and realize the new glory of the sinification of Buddhism in the new era of the great rejuvenation of Chinese civilization.
Professor Dai Xianqun of the School of Social History of Fujian Normal University briefly talked about the deeds of Master Yuanying from three aspects: Buddhist leaders, Buddhist masters, and patriotic senior monks, and held that as a pioneer in China's overseas promotion, the Buddhist circles should continue to uphold the spiritual merits of Master Yuanying, play a role as a bridge and link in the exchange and mutual reference of overseas civilizations, and promote Buddhism to make due contributions in social harmony, the reunification of the motherland, international cooperation, and world peace.
Miao Jianqing, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Fuzhou University, proposed three dimensions to be paid attention to in the study of Yuanying: First, we should strengthen the study of Master Yuanying's dharma protection and cultivation, including the three levels of patriotic re-education, the promotion of Fa Lisheng, and the spread of the Dharma; second, we should pay attention to the study of The Buddha's character of Master Yuanying, which also specifically pointed out that the unique role of the specific regional environment in achieving a generation of masters should not be ignored; third, attention should be paid to the study of the influence of Master Yuanying's era, including the manifestation of regional influences, the practical impact of the flow of the Dharma, and the flow of the Dharma. The pragmatic model of patriotism and love of religion is three angles.
Yang Zurong, director of the Institute of Ancient Books of Fujian Normal University, first briefly summarized the existing research of Master Yuanying, and proposed to pay attention to the unique views in Master Yuanying's lecture notes in the next step of research, and put forward new research ideas for the follow-up study of Master Yuanying.
Lin Guanchao, associate professor of the Department of Philosophy of Xiamen University, took the three poems in Master Yuanying's "A Collection of Poems of Yi RoaringTang" as the starting point to make a simple interpretation of the three poems. Master Yuanying's three poems were composed long before the boom in the study of authenticity in China around the 1980s of the last century, and they were the earliest monks in modern times who paid attention to authentic monks, which fully demonstrated his international vision.
Chen Wenlong, associate professor of the School of Social History of Fujian Normal University, made a further interpretation of Master Yuanying's Zen and Pure Double Cultivation, believing that in terms of practice, Master Yuanying advocated the use of pure Meditation. In terms of Zen purification thought, its Zen method is inherited from the Enlightenment Thought of the Northern Sect Of the Divine Xiu, and returns to the Dharma Dharma, as mentioned in the Lecture Notes of the Lengyan Sutra, "The hearts of all sentient beings are inherently Buddha-wise, like the light in the mirror." Coarse and fine delusional troubles, such as all dirt. The dirt on the mirror must be purified by the work of rubbing."
Ma Haiyan, associate professor of the Minnan Institute of Culture of Minnan Normal University, proposed that we should strengthen the understanding of the historical status and special contributions of Master Yuanying, unlike some modern monks who have tried to ban the radical proposition of traditional Buddhist teacher-apprenticeship, Master Yuanying has always attached importance to the maintenance of the jungle system and the inheritance of the Dharma lineage, and he and Master Hongyi, Master Yinguang and other monks have obviously foresighted in maintaining the Buddhist tradition today.
Li Hujiang, an associate researcher at the Fujian Normal University's Fujian-Taiwan Regional Research Center, found many speeches, poems and other relevant materials of Master Yuanying that had not yet been included in the "Complete Works of Master Yuanying" from the "Nanying Buddhism" issued during the Japanese occupation period in Taiwan, and sorted out this, providing valuable suggestions for the future revision of the "Complete Works of Master Yuanying".
Master Ling Yao, deputy secretary general and director of the office of the Fujian Buddhist Association, Lin Zhonghou, senior lecturer of fujian technical education center, and Fan Yinming, senior engineer of Zhangzhou Hehe Ecological Research Institute, respectively, from the perspective of religious inheritance, Zen poetry and ecological construction, put forward unique perspectives and brought wonderful speeches at the meeting. Mr. Liu Zhongwu of the Fujian Yuanying Research Association brought a written speech. At the meeting, Master Ren Jing of the Kaiyuan Institute of Buddhist Culture in Fujian Province introduced the plan of the "Third International Academic Forum on North-South Buddhism" to be held in the second half of the year. Other great masters and experts and scholars who attended the seminar included Ma Jianmin, deputy director of the Institute of History of the Fujian Academy of Social Sciences, and Liu Dong, associate researcher of the Fujian Institute of Ethnic and Religious Studies.
The Master of Nature expressed his gratitude to all the Great Buddhist masters and experts and scholars for their time-consuming visits, and provided many useful ideas for the future development of the Society. For the emergence of many young scholars who paid attention to Master Yuanying at this symposium, Master Nature said that these young scholars can look forward to the future, and hope that in the next few years, they can make tangible results for the research, inheritance and publicity of the thought of the patriotic monk Yuanying.
It is reported that on the morning of the same day, the Fujian Yuanying Master Research Association held the third member congress and completed the election of the new term. Founded in 2010, the Fujian Yuanying Master Research Association is a provincial, academic and non-profit social organization voluntarily formed by experts and scholars from the Buddhist circles, academia, literature and art circles and relevant people, which aims to tell Chinese stories well, inherit and carry forward China's excellent traditional culture, and adapt Buddhism to socialist society through the study and exchange of life, writings and ideas of Yuanying masters. Give play to and promote the research and dissemination of Buddhist culture, excavate and promote the positive ideological connotations in Buddhist culture, and play a positive role in the process of sinification of Buddhism; take master Yuanying's Dharma vein as the link to actively promote the overseas dissemination of Buddhism's excellent traditional culture, contribute to the cultural construction and prosperity of China's humanities and social sciences in the core area of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, promote communication and exchanges with Taiwan, Hong Kong, macao and overseas, and actively serve the great cause of the reunification of the motherland and the construction of the "Belt and Road".
Born in Gutian, Fujian Province on the twelfth day of the fifth lunar month in 1878, Master Yuanying, a leader of modern and contemporary Chinese Buddhism, has made great contributions to uniting Buddhists throughout the country and promoting peace. The master was not only a profound Buddhist scholar, but also a model of pro-party, patriotic and apologetic, and was elected the first president of the Buddhist Association of China in 1953. There are four great disciples who are famous on both sides of the taiwan strait, namely Master Ming Yang and Zhao Puchu, who spread the Dharma in Chinese mainland, and Cihang Bodhisattva and Elder Baisheng who spread the Dharma in Taiwan. There is a "Complete Collection of Master Yuanying" passed down, which has been compiled and supplemented by the Fujian Provincial Master Research Association of Yuanying, and has been published by the Religious culture publishing house.
