In the film, Barnum is portrayed as a fighter for social equality, treating all people with disabilities equally. But in reality, Barnum is an out-and-out exploiter — he amasses his wealth by exploiting African Americans and people with disabilities.
At one point, Barnum bought a blind, severely paralyzed African-American woman and advertised her as "a masterpiece of nature that satisfies your curiosity," declaring that the woman was 161 years old (actually only 80 years old). Barnum reportedly earned $1,500 a week by showing the woman. But the woman did not receive a penny until her death.
When the woman died, Barnum conducted a public autopsy on her and charged tickets to those who came to see her. He is really a drop of human value he does not let go, live out of a capitalist.
In addition to exploiting people, Barnum also abuses animals.
He would use bull hooks to abuse elephants, making them fearful and obedient. In order to tame elephants, Barnum also invented the "burning method", which is to stuff hot rods into the elephant's nose.
On another occasion, Barnum captured two beluga whales and imprisoned them in the basement of a New York museum. Two days later, both beluga whales died.
If Hollywood were to restore Barnum to one to one, King of the Circus would be a horror film.
