"Natural Science" Black Cherry: The bark can extract dyes

Black cherry, deciduous tree or small tree.

The leaves are inverted ovate and have coarsely serrated edges. Flowers 3 to 10 in a total inflorescence, large bracts, green, and inflorescence; flower diameter of about 1.5 cm; petals are inverted ovate, white; stamens are mostly, slightly shorter than petals; flower peduncles are shorter than stamens. The drupes are ovoid, smooth and grooveless on the outside, red, and later turn black or blackish-purple; the nuclei are wrinkled. The flowering period is from June and the fruit period is from August to September.

It grows in yangpo mixed wood forests or on humus soil and stone slopes. It is produced in Benxi, Anshan and other places.

Ornamental tree species, flowering and fruit period have a high ornamentality. The bark can be extracted from the dye. Wood can be used for joiners. The fruit is edible, has an astringent antiperspirant effect, and can also treat laryngitis.
