Hohai University

Hohai University (Hohai University), referred to as "Hehai", located in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is a century-old history of running schools, featuring water conservancy, engineering as the mainstay, multidisciplinary coordinated development of the Ministry of Education directly under the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Water Resources, the State Oceanic Administration and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government jointly built a national key university, is the first batch of national doctoral, master's, bachelor's degree awarding authority, is the national "211 Project" key construction, "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" The university that has built and established the graduate school is a national "double-first-class" world-class discipline construction university, with the State Key Laboratory of Hydrology, Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering Science and the National Engineering Research Center for Efficient Utilization of Water Resources and Engineering Safety.

The predecessor of Hohai University can be traced back to the "Hohai Engineering College" founded in Nanjing in 1915, and is the first institution of higher learning in China to train water conservancy talents. In 1924, it merged with the Department of Engineering of National Southeast University to form Hohai University of Technology, and in 1927 it was merged into the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, which was later renamed National Central University and Nanjing University. In 1952, the Department of Water Conservancy of Nanjing University, the Department of Water Conservancy of Jiaotong University, the Water Conservancy Group of the Department of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, the Water Conservancy Group of the Department of Civil Engineering of Zhejiang University and the East China Water Conservancy College were merged to form the "East China Water Conservancy College". In 1960, it was recognized as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1985, the traditional name of the school was restored, "Hohai University", and Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally inscribed the name of the school.

History

In 1915, Zhang Xiao, then the chief of agriculture and commerce and the president of the National Water Conservancy Bureau, presided over the establishment of the Hehai Engineering College, with Huang Yanpei as the director of school preparation, and officially opened on March 15, with Xu Zhaonan as the first principal, and Li Yizhi, a modern water conservancy expert recognized by China's water conservancy community as the most contributing modern water conservancy expert in theory and practice, as the school's academic director. This is the first higher education institution in China that specializes in training water conservancy technical talents, which is affiliated with the National Water Conservancy Bureau and reported to the Ministry of Education for the record. In 1924, the Hohai Engineering College and the merged National Southeast University of Engineering established the Hohai University of Engineering, which was still subordinate to the National Water Conservancy Bureau, and Mao Yi was promoted to the first president.

In June 1927, Hohai University of Technology and National Southeast University and other schools were merged into the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University (renamed National Jiangsu University, Jiangsu University, and National Central University in 1928), and all students and library equipment of Hohai University of Technology were merged into the Department of Civil Engineering of the College of Engineering (changed to the Department of Civil Engineering in 1928), and some teachers continued to apply for teaching, of which Lu Enxu was the dean of the School of Engineering and Zhang Moshi was the director of the Department of Civil Engineering. The Department of Water Conservancy of the Faculty of Engineering of Chuo University was established in June 1937, but the Water Conservancy Group of the Faculty of Civil Engineering has continued to exist ever since. In 1939, chuo University established the Institute of Engineering, of which the Ministry of Civil Engineering had a water conservancy engineering group. In 1941, the water conservancy group was assigned to the water conservancy department. In May 1949, it became the Department of Water Conservancy of the School of Engineering of Nanjing University.

In 1952, the national faculties and departments were adjusted, and the Department of Hydraulic Engineering of the College of Engineering of Nanjing University, the Department of Water Conservancy of Jiaotong University, the Water Conservancy Group of the Department of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, the Water Conservancy Group of the Department of Civil Engineering of Zhejiang University, and the Water Conservancy Engineering Department of East China Water Conservancy College were merged to form East China Water Conservancy College. At the beginning of the establishment of the institute, there were four departments: hydrology, water conservancy soil improvement, water conservancy power generation and hydraulic structure. In 1953, the Department of Hydraulic Technology and Architecture of the Department of Civil Engineering of Xiamen University, the Department of Farmland and Water Conservancy of Shandong Agricultural College, and the Department of Water Conservancy Engineering of Huaihe Water Conservancy School were merged. In 1955, the water conservancy and soil improvement major of East China Water Conservancy Institute was adjusted with the waterway and port hydraulic engineering major of Wuhan Water Conservancy College. In 1960, it was identified as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Hohai University Jiangning Campus Library In 1985, the 70th anniversary of the founding of Hohai School, East China Water Conservancy College was renamed Hohai University, restoring the traditional name of "Hehai", and Deng Xiaoping personally inscribed the name of the school.

In 1995, when Hohai University was celebrating its 80th anniversary, Jiang Zemin wrote an inscription for the school: "Facing the future, forging ahead in a pioneering spirit, and further developing the cause of water conservancy education." Li Peng, Li Lanqing, Qian Zhengying, and other party and state leaders also wrote inscriptions for the school, affirming and placing high hopes on the development of the school's cause.

On October 23, 2005, the 90th anniversary of the school, Premier Wen Jiabao inspected Hohai University and delivered an important speech and put forward the six-character requirement of "dedication, truth-seeking, and responsibility", placing great expectations on the school.

On November 24, 2009, the signing ceremony of the agreement between the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province to jointly build Hohai University was held in Hohai University, and Hohai University became the fourth university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Province in Jiangsu Province.

On May 22, 2014, 13 units, including Hohai University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese Sciences Academy of Sciences, and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, won the title of "Talent Theory Research Base".

Hohai University was a university affiliated to the Ministry of Water Resources for a long time, and in 2000 it was placed under the management of the Ministry of Education, and in 2001, 2005 and 2011, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Water Resources signed three agreements to jointly build Hohai University.

In September 2017, Hohai University was selected as one of the first batch of "double-first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China. In November, the school was awarded the honorary title of the first national civilized campus.

On September 17, 2018, Hohai University held a seminar on the development of agricultural engineering disciplines and the unveiling ceremony of agricultural engineering colleges at Xikang Road Campus.
