On 22 June 2014, the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Doha, Qatar, agreed to inscribe the Grand Canal of China on the World Heritage List. This is the 46th item inscribed on China's World Heritage List. The series of heritage declared by the Grand Canal are respectively selected from the typical river sections and important heritage sites of each river section, including 27 sections of the Grand Canal in China, as well as 58 canal hydraulic relics, canal subsidiary remains and canal-related heritage, with a total length of 1011 kilometers. Located at the southernmost tip of China's Grand Canal, the Zhejiang East Canal is the meeting point of China's Grand Canal and the Maritime Silk Road. As part of the Zhejiang East Canal, Yuyao has two sections of the river that have become "World Heritage Sites".
The World Heritage Committee believes that the Grand Canal of China is the longest and oldest artificial waterway in the world, and the largest and most extensive engineering project before the Industrial Revolution, which has promoted the exchange of materials between the north and the south of China and the unified jurisdiction of the territory, reflecting the superb wisdom and courage of the Chinese people, as well as the outstanding achievements of oriental civilization in water conservancy technology and management capabilities. After more than 2,000 years of continuous development and evolution, China's Grand Canal still plays an important role in transportation, transportation, irrigation and water transmission, and has made important contributions to ensuring China's economic prosperity and social stability.
Yuyao is located in the middle of the Ningshao Plain, connecting Shaoxing and Ningbo, the territory of the Yao River as the main body of the Zhejiang East Canal, the west is divided into two lines from Shangyu into the Yao River, the east into the Yuyao City, divided into Houqing, Zhongshun, the most Liang Three Rivers Gongwei Twin Cities, and divided into the Ci River and the Yao River out of the Ningbo River North Territory. The Yuyao section of the Grand Canal inscribed on the World Heritage List is located in the middle of the Zhejiang East Canal, including the Upper Yu-Yu Yao Section of the Grand Canal (Yu Yu Canal) and the Ningbo Section of the Grand Canal (Cijiang), involving Mushan, Mazhu, Zhangting, Sanqi City, Hemudu and other townships, with a total length of about 24.2 kilometers, including 3 canal hydraulic relics, 1 historical and cultural block, and 1 bridge.

It can be said that the Grand Canal application is not only a major cultural project, but also a people's livelihood project and an ecological project, which will push Yuyao onto the stage of world culture and tourism, and also bring beneficial improvements to the quality of life of the people along the canal. Yuyu Canal is an important section connecting the Cao'e River and the Yao River, was built in the Song Dynasty, it is the local lakes, swamps formed after artificial sorting, from the west to the Yuzhao family village (Cao'e River), through the Wufu Long Dam, into Yuyao. The Yuyu Canal in Yuyao is composed of hutang river and Mazhu middle river, with a total length of 11.4 kilometers, a width of 40 meters to 60 meters, a water depth of 2 meters to 3 meters, a six-level waterway, starting from a long dam in the west, turning southeast to the east, crossing the Doumen Caoshu Bridge, and merging into the Yao River, which is the largest tributary of the Yao River, along the way there are Mushan River, Xiangjialong River, Heshu River and other convergence, and the north side is The largest lake in Yaoxi, Mushan Lake. This section of the canal has water conservancy and shipping facilities such as Doumen Old Lock, Doumen New Lock, And Xihenghe Lock, which is an important part of the canal and has created the prosperity of Mazhu Market Town.
At the Jingjiang Crossing in Mazhu, the Northern Song Dynasty king An Shi wrote with deep affection "Leaving Yin to look east of the JingJiang River": "The village is depressed at night, and it is hurt to look east sideways. In the sixth year of the Southern Song Dynasty (1246), the Cijiang River was dredged and developed under the auspices of Yan Yizhong, and was built to avoid the influence of the Yao River by the tides. Cijiang Originates from Zhenhai Xiaotaohualing, passes through the Cijiang Gate at the mouth of Panjiadao in Yunshan Village, Sanqi Town, enters Yuyao, and meanders east to join the Yao River at the mouth of the Sanjiangkou in Zhangting Town, with a length of 12.8 kilometers, an average river width of 30 meters, an average water depth of 2.1 meters, and there are Babzipu, Pengwangpu, Wuzepu, Guanqiaopu, Weijiapu, Yunshanpu from the north to the south, and the Fengchan River, Dajingpu, Xiaojingpu, Bailuopu and other rivers in the south to communicate with the Yao River. Zhangting Old Street is the confluence of the Cijiang and Yao rivers, where the Song Dynasty poet Lu You once wrote the poem "Fa Zhangting".
Zhujiadu Village, Sanqi Town, where the Cijiang River flows, has a Zhujiang Bridge, which is the first steel structure cable bridge in Zhejiang Province. Zhujiadu Village is the ancestral home of the Qing Dynasty poet Yuan Ming, which originally belonged to Cixi and now belongs to Yuyao. Yuan Ming's Suiyuan Poetry Volume Eryun: "Ancestor Cixi, grandson of the former Ming Huaimei Emperor." Huai Mei pointed to Yuan Hongxun of Zhu Jiadu. The city further optimizes the construction around the grand canal scenery buildings and projects. For example, the Yao River Water Bank - Farming Culture Exchange Center project located on the edge of the Grand Canal is like a "bright cultural pearl" in the Yuyao section of the Zhejiang East Canal, and the main body of the project is a relocated Ming and Qing dynasty ancient building, covering an area of about 200 acres. Under the guidance and promotion of relevant departments, the project will further improve the tourism supporting service facilities, make good use of tourism resources, live cultural resources, and make full use of ecological resources, and build the systematic high-quality cultural tourism landscape into an experience park that displays ancient architectural culture, Yangming culture and canal culture, and ensure that the cultural heritage and ecology of the canal are effectively protected and the precious cultural connotation is inherited and promoted.
Although the Yao River is not included in the Grand Canal of China, it is still an important part of the canal cultural belt. As a landmark of the ancient city of Yuyao, the Shunjiang Tower on the banks of the Yao River will be reopened to citizens and tourists on the eve of New Year's Day in 2021, which has a certain role in the living use of the canal cultural belt. Citizens can learn about the "past and present life" of Shunjiang Tower through texts, pictures and videos, and can also see the Tongji Bridge and Yaojiang River, which used to be known as "Thousands of Miles Away from the Sea and Moon", and hear the "Morning Bell and Twilight Drum". Shunjiang Tower was once called "Drum Tower" by the people of Yuyao, simple and solemn, and tongji Bridge constitutes a whole of "Changhong Soaring in the Air, Feige Town Stream", carrying a profound historical heritage.
