Zheng Shu, Institute of Cancer Research, Zhejiang University: Do useful things, do useful people

There are two mornings a week to sit in the outpatient clinic, one half a day to carry out multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, and the rest of the time has been soaked in the laboratory to take students and do projects. This is the "biological clock" of Professor Zheng Shu, a 90-year-old student at Zhejiang University.

The story of Professor Zheng Shu's medical career is detailed in Part 3

In the face of such a high-intensity work, she smiled and said: "The pressure is not great, and it is quite happy." Have fun when you have work to do. A person must be useful when he is alive, to be a useful person. ”

In order to popularize the importance of early screening of bowel cancer, on April 16, Professor Zheng came to the scene of the life-changing trajectory of the Nuohui Health Brand Day |, she said that our country is a country with a large population, and the incidence of tumors is in the middle, but in recent years, the incidence of bowel cancer has obviously been rising. So we have to pay attention to it, and malignant tumors are one of the two leading causes of death in our country.

She shared with the media present and the national audience in front of the live broadcast that she had half a century of screening work – good screening is the screening that people are willing to participate in. We have been trying to optimize the way screening is as good as possible so that the people screened are easy to accept.

"Be a competitive college student"

In 1931, Zheng Shu was born in Anhui, a family of four children, and she was the third oldest.

Looking at her wearing a cheongsam, many people may not think that Zheng Shu's favorite thing is to play basketball.

"From 1951 to 1955, I was the captain of the Zhejiang Women's Basketball Team, playing center forwards and leading the team to represent East China to national competitions."

This time is also the busiest time for Zheng Shu's studies.

In 1949, the university had not yet implemented the unified examination, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Dalian Medical College and other schools together to recruit students independently, Zheng Shu took three exams, were admitted.

"I was one of the first batch of college students after the founding of New China, and our generation all have a very strong sense of mission, that is, to compete for morale."

She eventually chose Zhejiang University School of Medicine, then president Zhu Kezhen, and the same famous professor Tan Jiazhen taught biology.

Zheng Shu remembers that Wang Zhongqiao, the teacher who taught the anatomy class, returned from studying in Germany, "very strict, very fierce, as long as he asks a question, we must answer it immediately, so we are under a lot of pressure." ”

In addition to the intense study, she also remembered an interesting thing: because of the liberation, the original 20 or 30 people per year of Zhejiang University Medical College, to Zheng Shu's class of students suddenly increased, reaching 70 people, bone and other teaching aids are not enough.

The boys went to the pine yard of the "mass grave" at that time to dig bones, and the girls were responsible for going to the library to occupy the seat. Their way of occupying the seat is very effective: put a small piece of human bone on the table, and no one dares to grab it. ”

Six years later, only 42 of the original 70 eventually graduated. In February 1955, Zheng Shu went to work in the hospital, "just in time for Zhejiang Ii to form a tumor surgery department, he went."

"Caring for the sick should be reflected in every detail"

At the end of 1956, Zheng Shu heard that the Shanghai Municipal Radium Ingot Hospital (now Fudan University Cancer Hospital) was holding a tumor pathology study class, so she went to sign up.

After returning from her studies, she opened a pathology department in the Second Hospital of Zhejiang Medical College, and soon became famous in the province, and doctors from all over the world came to study.

But I didn't expect that after the "Cultural Revolution" came, most of the young people in the hospital went in tandem, and there were few people, "the slice is also me, the doctor is also me, the report is also me, and the operation is also me", but also practiced a unique job of watching films.

One thing that impressed Zheng Shu more deeply was related to uterine fibroids and related to pregnant women's corpus luteum.

In early 1966, Zheng Shu, who was accompanying the medical team to the countryside in Yongkang, was urgently called to participate in the consultation.

When she arrived at the operating room, she was stunned by the scene in front of her: a 30-year-old female patient was lying on the operating table, and the doctor next to her wanted to remove a uterus larger than a basketball, covered with thick blood vessels and attached fibroids.

At that time, the medical conditions were very limited, the operating room often lost power, there was often not enough blood reserves for large surgeries, and there was no advanced ultrasound imaging technology, and the diagnosis and treatment process relied more on the doctor's technology and experience.

Zheng Shu found that the patient had a corpus luteum suggesting pregnancy. At the moment of the first attack, Zheng Shu quickly made a judgment - stop the uterine fibroid surgery and change it to a cesarean section. As soon as the scalpel cut open the isthmus of the uterus, the warm amniotic fluid immediately gushed out, and a small head followed, and the doctors present were stunned...

"Every time I think back on this case, I'm always scared." Zheng Shu said that it is not easy for thirty-year-old women to have a child, but if they are misdiagnosed as uterine fibroids, they will always lose the opportunity to be mothers.

In fact, the corpus luteum is the physiological knowledge that every medical student has learned in class, which is the vascular lute gland that is rapidly transformed by the follicle into a vascular lute gland after ovulation, and can also become the nutrient for the first five months of the fetus.

However, how to apply the physiological and pathological knowledge learned in these classes and solve practical problems is a problem that every practitioner must consider.

"I do what the country needs me to do"

From 1973 to 1975, China carried out the first population cause of death investigation, and the high incidence and mortality rate of bowel cancer in the southeast coastal area attracted the attention of Professor Li Bing (the adopted daughter of Premier Zhou Enlai) who was then the director of the National Cancer Prevention and Control Office and the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

She went to Beijing and Shanghai to find Mr. Zheng Shu, "She thinks that if you do breast cancer very well, you can definitely do bowel cancer." ”

At that time, Mr. Zheng Shu had just returned from his studies in the United States, and when he was in the United States, he studied under Bernard Fisher, an internationally renowned scholar in the field of breast cancer and a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The latter also chaired the National Surgical Assisted Breast/Bowel Program (NSABP), pioneering the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer and being influential in the industry.

Mr. Zheng Shu studied in Professor Fisher's laboratory for two years, focusing on breast cancer, doing a lot of basic research and animal experiments on estrogen receptors and other aspects, and also observing and learning how they carried out clinical trials, so the initial focus of work after returning to China was still on breast cancer.

Recalling this experience, There was no trace of regret in Mr. Zheng's expression: "I was a first-year university student in 1949, and I studied completely under the red flag, so I can do whatever the (organization) wants me to do, and I will do whatever is useful to the people." ”

However, the bowel cancer of that era was not easy to deal with.

There was nothing at that time, you see I have a picture of me, 15 centimeters hard like a steel tube [proctoscopy], so do an examination.

Early rigid rectoscopy

This kind of examination seems very awkward now, but Zheng Shu said: "We never think about gender differences in our work, nor do we say that I can't do it because I'm a woman." ”

In addition to technical constraints, local governments do not attach importance to screening.

China's first colon cancer population prevention and treatment research was originally planned to be carried out in Jiashan, a high incidence area of bowel cancer, but when Zheng Shu's colorectal cancer research leading group arrived in Jiashan, for some reasons, it was not carried out.

By chance, they found a screening group in Haining, a hundred miles away from Jiashan.

Zheng Shu, Institute of Cancer Research, Zhejiang University: Do useful things, do useful people

When China first carried out research on the prevention and treatment of bowel cancer populations, Haining's rectal cancer census bulletin board was reported

At that time, Mr. Zheng Shu did not expect that with this "hard as a steel tube" colonoscopy and rectal digital examination, from 1977 to 1980, they completed the intestinal cancer census of 288,000 people in Haining City, Zhejiang Province, found 4930 cases of adenoma and 82 cases of cancer, and received timely intervention.

Originally, this matter was over, but Zheng Shu felt that it was not over, when she was young, Zheng Shu's father, who was the principal of the primary school, educated her, which was a simple sentence, "To be a person must be responsible." ”

She often instills in her students the idea that oncologists are not simply surgeons. "It is not very hasty for patients to do surgery as soon as they come, throw away when the operation is done, whether the patient is still alive after discharge, whether there is a recurrence, and the follow-up things are never known, which is not OK."

Therefore, every two or three years, Zheng Shu led the team to review these 4,000 people again, a check is more than 20 years, and later more than 500 of these people relapsed, and some people re-developed 5 times, which can be attributed to genetic problems.

These two decades of effort have reduced the incidence and mortality rate of rectal cancer in Haining by 31 percent; colorectal cancer by more than 17 percent. This is the only example of a nationwide decline in both rates of cancer in years.

Professor Zheng Shu has collected and sorted patient information cards for decades

Zheng Shu, who cares for others, neglects to pay attention to himself and his family. For 18 years after marrying her husband, she was separated for work reasons, and her young daughter needed to be supervised by her alone.

When it was the turn of the night shift, there was no one at home to take care of her daughter, so Zheng Shu took her to the hospital. When the emergency room went to the operating table at night, she had to let her daughter stay in the duty room.

Sometimes the operation is done all night, and when it comes out, it is light, and Zheng Shu has to ask his colleagues to help buy a sticky rice ball as his daughter's breakfast. Talking about his daughter, Zheng Shu will always reveal his mother's tenderness and infinite guilt...

"A good doctor needs to be by the patient's side"

Since 1984, Zheng Shu has been the principal of Zhejiang Medical University for nearly 13 years, Zheng Shu said with a smile, I am basically asking for money as a principal, asking for money for school construction and applying for money for scientific research projects.

"When I entered Zhejiang Medical University as a principal, the campus was very chaotic. At that time, everyone's living standards were not high, many people lived in the school, and there were chickens and ducks in the school, so people called the medical university "Chicken University".

When I went in, I saw that my office was very small, and the building where the office was located was very broken, and the floor hallways were dangling. I was there alone, and I looked at a faded drawing with a gap. They said that this place would build a teaching building next time, and I said, "Where is the money for this teaching building?" ”

For this building, Zheng Shu and Shen Chengfang, the principal in charge at the time, spent a lot of effort, "After building it, if there is no money, I will ask the province for money." In this way, we later called Building 5, that is, the building for biomedical engineering, the building for foreign guests, and the building for biomedical engineering students to intern and take classes, so that one floor was planned. ”

At present, Professor Zheng also brings a number of doctoral students and master's students, "I see a doctor alone, there will always be a day when I can't move, cultivate more talents, in order to serve more patients." ”

When Zheng Shu went out of the clinic, there were always a few doctoral students to observe. She constantly warns students that clinical medicine is "by the patient's side", and a good doctor needs to be around the patient, really care for him, and forgive his heart, "just like your family".

On the 116th anniversary of Zhejiang University in 2013, Professor Zheng Shu, who was 82 years old at the time, as the president of the former Zhejiang Medical University, donated the 500,000 yuan prize he received from the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Major Contribution Award two years ago to set up the "Zhejiang University Education Foundation Zheng Shu Medical Education Fund". "The criterion for reward is a sense of responsibility, a teacher, a student and a doctor who can compare hearts to heart."

At the head of Professor Zheng Shu's wall, there is a picture written to her by Jin Yong, "Zheng Ren Gao Yi, Tree Tree Man". This painting was written to her by Jin Yong on his own initiative when the two people did not know each other.

"At that time, his brother was living in Run Run Shaw Hospital, and I went to see him, and he knew it, so he wrote me such a thing."

In fact, Zheng Shu did not know that the patient was Jin Yong's younger brother, she was just invited to Run Run Run Shaw Hospital to discuss the treatment with the experts.

"I can't leave my patients"

As a physician, Professor Zheng Shu attaches great importance to the intersectionality between disciplines.

She believes that tumor is a university discipline, but in order to achieve success, it is necessary to have a deep foundation in anatomical surgery, a solid knowledge of tumor biology, and theories such as pathology and embryonic development, in order to be able to integrate and apply what they have learned.

When Professor Zheng Shu gave a lecture to the students, she talked about the biological basis of tumors, from epithelial cell mesenchymal cell transformation to tumor microenvironment, from signaling pathways to stem cell surface markers, full of knowledge.

In fact, Professor Zheng Shu only began to learn molecular experiments at the age of 60, she said, "Learning is endless, my brain can not be old, I have to keep thinking."

Today, Professor Zheng Shu still insists on the front line of medicine, in the comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors such as gastrointestinal tract, breast, thyroid and so on, and visits twice a week, taking teaching rounds, rain or shine, and insisting on scientific research.

She said, "There is more work than full. Nothing to do, feeling empty. Society helps and supports each other, and if living is not helpful to people, you feel bored. ”

During the epidemic period, Professor Zheng Shu also consulted on the online free consultation platform of the Internet Hospital of the Second Hospital of Zhejiang University. Through the screen of her mobile phone, she patiently replied to a question from a breast tumor patient and wrote down the diagnostic recommendations in a stroke.

"In response to the call of the state, continue to exert strength through the Internet platform, haha!" Professor Zheng Shu's voice is loud, his spirit is very strong, and his laughter is even more hearty.

"Now, the whole hospital is fighting the epidemic prevention and defense war with all its might, and when I am old, I can't rush to the front line of the fight against the epidemic, but I also have to do what I can for the hospital and make some efforts in the rear."

For netizens mentioned how to maintain health, she smiled and said that she did not have any secrets, a good mentality is the most important, usually walk for half an hour, used to love to drink green tea, now switch to black tea with lemon juice (stomach), eat on time for three meals. Eat less fried things, spicy things can be eaten, do not eat partially, and have an annual physical examination.
