"Be a competitive college student"
In 1931, Zheng Shu was born in Anhui, a family of four children, and she was the third oldest.

She eventually chose Zhejiang University School of Medicine, then president Zhu Kezhen, and the same famous professor Tan Jiazhen taught biology.
Zheng Shu remembers that Wang Zhongqiao, the teacher who taught the anatomy class, returned from studying in Germany, "very strict, very fierce, as long as he asks a question, we must answer it immediately, so we are under a lot of pressure." ”
In addition to the intense study, she also remembered an interesting thing: because of the liberation, the original 20 or 30 people per year of Zhejiang University Medical College, to Zheng Shu's class of students suddenly increased, reaching 70 people, bone and other teaching aids are not enough.

At the end of 1956, Zheng Shu heard that the Shanghai Municipal Radium Ingot Hospital (now Fudan University Cancer Hospital) was holding a tumor pathology study class, so she went to sign up.
After returning from her studies, she opened a pathology department in the Second Hospital of Zhejiang Medical College, and soon became famous in the province, and doctors from all over the world came to study.
But I didn't expect that after the "Cultural Revolution" came, most of the young people in the hospital went in tandem, and there were few people, "the slice is also me, the doctor is also me, the report is also me, and the operation is also me", but also practiced a unique job of watching films.
One thing that impressed Zheng Shu more deeply was related to uterine fibroids and related to pregnant women's corpus luteum.
In early 1966, Zheng Shu, who was accompanying the medical team to the countryside in Yongkang, was urgently called to participate in the consultation.
When she arrived at the operating room, she was stunned by the scene in front of her: a 30-year-old female patient was lying on the operating table, and the doctor next to her wanted to remove a uterus larger than a basketball, covered with thick blood vessels and attached fibroids.
At that time, the medical conditions were very limited, the operating room often lost power, there was often not enough blood reserves for large surgeries, and there was no advanced ultrasound imaging technology, and the diagnosis and treatment process relied more on the doctor's technology and experience.
Zheng Shu found that the patient had a corpus luteum suggesting pregnancy. At the moment of the first attack, Zheng Shu quickly made a judgment - stop the uterine fibroid surgery and change it to a cesarean section. As soon as the scalpel cut open the isthmus of the uterus, the warm amniotic fluid immediately gushed out, and a small head followed, and the doctors present were stunned...
"Every time I think back on this case, I'm always scared." Zheng Shu said that it is not easy for thirty-year-old women to have a child, but if they are misdiagnosed as uterine fibroids, they will always lose the opportunity to be mothers.
In fact, the corpus luteum is the physiological knowledge that every medical student has learned in class, which is the vascular lute gland that is rapidly transformed by the follicle into a vascular lute gland after ovulation, and can also become the nutrient for the first five months of the fetus.
However, how to apply the physiological and pathological knowledge learned in these classes and solve practical problems is a problem that every practitioner must consider.
"I do what the country needs me to do"
From 1973 to 1975, China carried out the first population cause of death investigation, and the high incidence and mortality rate of bowel cancer in the southeast coastal area attracted the attention of Professor Li Bing (the adopted daughter of Premier Zhou Enlai) who was then the director of the National Cancer Prevention and Control Office and the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.
She went to Beijing and Shanghai to find Mr. Zheng Shu, "She thinks that if you do breast cancer very well, you can definitely do bowel cancer." ”

Mr. Zheng Shu studied in Professor Fisher's laboratory for two years, focusing on breast cancer, doing a lot of basic research and animal experiments on estrogen receptors and other aspects, and also observing and learning how they carried out clinical trials, so the initial focus of work after returning to China was still on breast cancer.
Recalling this experience, There was no trace of regret in Mr. Zheng's expression: "I was a first-year university student in 1949, and I studied completely under the red flag, so I can do whatever the (organization) wants me to do, and I will do whatever is useful to the people." ”
However, the bowel cancer of that era was not easy to deal with.

China's first colon cancer population prevention and treatment research was originally planned to be carried out in Jiashan, a high incidence area of bowel cancer, but when Zheng Shu's colorectal cancer research leading group arrived in Jiashan, for some reasons, it was not carried out.
By chance, they found a screening group in Haining, a hundred miles away from Jiashan.

At that time, Mr. Zheng Shu did not expect that with this "hard as a steel tube" colonoscopy and rectal digital examination, from 1977 to 1980, they completed the intestinal cancer census of 288,000 people in Haining City, Zhejiang Province, found 4930 cases of adenoma and 82 cases of cancer, and received timely intervention.
Originally, this matter was over, but Zheng Shu felt that it was not over, when she was young, Zheng Shu's father, who was the principal of the primary school, educated her, which was a simple sentence, "To be a person must be responsible." ”
She often instills in her students the idea that oncologists are not simply surgeons. "It is not very hasty for patients to do surgery as soon as they come, throw away when the operation is done, whether the patient is still alive after discharge, whether there is a recurrence, and the follow-up things are never known, which is not OK."
Therefore, every two or three years, Zheng Shu led the team to review these 4,000 people again, a check is more than 20 years, and later more than 500 of these people relapsed, and some people re-developed 5 times, which can be attributed to genetic problems.
These two decades of effort have reduced the incidence and mortality rate of rectal cancer in Haining by 31 percent; colorectal cancer by more than 17 percent. This is the only example of a nationwide decline in both rates of cancer in years.
