In the previous section, we mentioned that the Former Committee of the Red Army decided to set up an ambush in a small layout to encircle and annihilate Tan Daoyuan's 50th Division, but Tan Daoyuan was cautious in using troops, and the Red Army did not succeed in setting up ambushes and annihilating them twice. As we said earlier, there are three conditions for setting up an ambush to encircle and annihilate the enemy: First, the number of troops must be sufficient and relative superiority must be formed. The second is that the terrain should be good, which is convenient for the troops to ambush and divide. Third, the enemy generals must be stupid and burrow into the preset pockets.
How to set up ambushes and encirclements, the Red Army established a strategy of luring the enemy to go deeper. What is it to lure the enemy deeper? From a military point of view, it is the method of operation in which the enemy systematically abandons some places in a strategic and campaign manner in the face of a strong enemy's attack and lures the enemy into a predetermined area to annihilate it.
Luring the enemy deep is actually an upgraded version of the rabbit, that is, putting some grass behind the stump, the rabbit sees the grass, can't stand the temptation of food, runs quickly, and ends up crashing into the stump and dying.
But whether it is to wait for the rabbit or to lure the enemy deeper, the commander of the other side must be as stupid as the rabbit.
Why did the Red Army choose Zhang Huizhan as the target of the ambush and annihilation? Because he meets one key condition, and that is that he is stupid like a rabbit.
On December 28, 1930, Lu Diping, who had unsuccessfully searched for the Red Army, ordered five divisions that had penetrated deep into the Central Soviet Region to carry out a general offensive against the Red Army in the Huangpi, Xiaobu, and Matian areas north of Ningdu, with the following specific arrangements:
(1) The 50th Division is on the east-west line of the source, and the 24th Division is in Luokou, strengthening the construction of fortifications and keeping a close vigilance. Because these 2 divisions sensed the danger, although they were ordered to advance, but they just did not advance, so Lu Diping had to let them defend on the spot.
(2) The 8th Division was limited to occupying the line of Wujiafang and Tiantou before the 30th, and was ready to attack the Red Army in front of it.
(3) The 18th Division marched east through Longgang to occupy Wumenling. The 28th Division captured Nankeng Wei via Yoxi and arrived only 30 days earlier, preparing to attack the Red Army in person.
(4) The air force is always ready to support ground forces in combat.
After the order was issued, the Red Army quickly received information and immediately made the decision to encircle and annihilate Zhang Huizhan at Longgang:
The main force of the Red Army secretly marched westward in two directions, asking for the main force of the 18th Division to be annihilated in the movement, and to use the Red Guards and other local armed forces to suppress other enemies. Among them, the 35th Division of the Red 12th Army was responsible for luring the enemy into the ambush area of our army in Longgang, and the commander of the 35th Division, Long Pulin, and the political commissar Ouyang Jian.
Other units of the Red Army quickly set up an ambush at Longgang, among which Su Yu's 64th Division was assigned to the command of the 12th Army, Luo Binghui, commander of the 12th Army, Tan Zhenlin, political commissar, Lin Ye, chief of staff, and Tan Zheng, director of the Political Department.
Although the Red Army was making intensive preparations, the officers and men all had a handful of sweat in their hands, was Zhang Huizhen that stupid rabbit? It turned out that Zhang Huihuan was the stupid rabbit. Let's get to know Zhang Huizhan.
A native of Changsha, Hunan, born in 1885, graduated from the Hunan Bingmu Academy, the Hunan Army Lecture Hall, and the Baoding Military Academy, studied at the Japanese Army Non-Commissioned Officer School in 1908, served as a staff officer of the Hunan Governor's Office in 1912, and was the chief of the Beiping Quartermaster School and a military instructor, and went to Germany to investigate the military. In 1926, he participated in the Northern Expedition and served as the commander of the 4th Division of the 2nd Army of the National Revolutionary Army, and later served as the deputy commander and commander of the 2nd Army, and in October 1928, the 2nd Army was downsized to the 18th Division, with Zhang Huizhan as the deputy division commander with the rank of lieutenant general, and in 1930 he was appointed as the commander of the 18th Division of the Army.
In fact, Zhang Huizhan was not reactionary at first, and there was a considerable degree of cooperation with our party, and in 1921, Zhang Huizhan was appointed brigade commander of the 4th Mixed Brigade of the Xiang Army and the chief of the Hunan Police Department, and together with the chairman and others, he participated in the expulsion campaign to expel Zhang Jingyao. In the Northern Expedition, it was even more closely related to our Party.
The 2nd Army in the Northern Expedition was reorganized from Tan Yanmin's Xiang Army, and the commander of the 4th Division was Zhang Huizhen, and the party representative was Li Liuru, who later served as the secretary general of the Central Committee during the Yan'an period. They cooperated very closely during the Northern Expedition, and the data recorded:

Especially during the occupation of Nanjing by the 2nd Army, Zhang Huizhan also expressed dissatisfaction with Chiang Kai-shek's behavior of "deliberately slaughtering the leaders of the workers' and peasants' mass movement and persecuting the Communists." It was after the Wuhan side "split the communists" that Li Liuru safely left Wuhan as a "public representative of the 4th Division Party." That is to say, at the beginning of 1927, Zhang Huizhan was still a positive image.
However, Zhang Huizhuan developed in the Xiang Army and was deeply valued by Tan Yanmin and Lu Diping, so Tan Yanmin defected to Chiang Kai-shek, and Zhang Huizhan naturally followed Chiang Kai-shek.
Some people want to ask, why did Tan Yanmin weigh Zhang Huizhan heavily? There are two main reasons:
First, the two feel sorry for each other. Zhang Huizhan's literary style is relatively good, while Tan Yanmin's literary level is very high, and he is still a calligrapher in the Republic of China. At that time, it was not good to fight like Zhang Huizhan, but there were not many generals who were a bit literate, and the two had a bit of a taste of pity for each other. Zhang Huizhan's literary level can be seen from two small things.
In 1928, Zhang Huizhan spent more than 10,000 pieces of ocean to build a fine courtyard, and after the completion of the courtyard, Zhang Huizhan personally wrote the word 'Caolu' as the name of the house. Everyone sees that these two words are not only very literary, but also these two words are written vigorously and powerfully, which deeply shows their calligraphy skills. The inside of the courtyard was designed by Zhang Huizhen himself, which is very simple and very charming, and it is not designed by cultural people at all.
Zhang Huizhan also wrote many poems, one of which is called "Feelings in the Past":
"If the summer is full of signs, the thirty years of the heart have dreamed; thinking of relatives and intuition is still in the past, killing thieves can be less than more; laughing at the dust and labor invading the sideburns, still returning to the juice to manage the fishing; the yellow warbler is vaguely recognized, and immediately feels the wave of death."
At that time, there were more literate generals, but there were very few generals who could write poetry, even if they played oil poems, and few people could write them.
The second is loyalty. Tan Yanmin is an old scholar, a traditional literati, very particular about Confucianism, in Confucianism, loyalty is the first, and Zhang Huizhuan is very loyal to Tan Yanmin.
There is also a reason, Tan Yanmin is fatter, and Zhang Huimin is fatter, so Tan Yanmin often carries Zhang Huimin, and with Zhang Huizhang, Tan Yanmin is not so fat.
In fact, this is also easy to understand, for example, when the bridesmaids can not be too beautiful, the bridesmaids must set off the beauty of the bride, the groomsmen are the same, not too dashing.
In the Kuomintang army, Tan Yanmin, Lu Diping, Zhang Huizhan, Tan Daoyuan and others were of the same faction. In this small group, Tan Yanmin is the oldest and the core, followed by Lu Diping, Zhang Huizhan and Tan Daoyuan are the younger brothers. After Tan Yanmin decided to defect to Chiang Kai-shek, this small group naturally turned to Chiang Kai-shek. Zhang Huizhan decided to follow Chiang Kai-shek and faced two problems:
First, he is a miscellaneous army and cannot enter Chiang Kai-shek's employment circle; he is neither a Huangpu student nor a native of Zhejiang, he is a graduate of the Japanese non-commissioned officer school, and this point can have something to do with Chiang Kai-shek.
Second, he had expressed dissatisfaction with Chiang Kai-shek's counter-revolutionary activities.
In particular, the second point directly determined that he raised the butcher's knife to the revolutionary masses, which was the surrender of Chiang Kai-shek.
In 1929, Lu Diping became chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Government. In order to consolidate his rule, Lu accompanied his loyal troops, the 18th Division, Zhang Huizhan to Gan. After Zhang came to Jiangxi, he also served as the commander of the Nanchang garrison, and during his tenure, he killed people like hemp, and was an executioner who killed people without blinking, and the citizens of Nanchang called him "Zhang Butcher". Under the pretext of allegedly committing a suspected crime by the Communist Party, he arrested patriots and killed more than 1,000 people.
In December of the same year, Chiang Kai-shek held a military conference in Nanchang to "suppress the Communists" for officers at and above the division level, and Zhang Huizhan carried out very hard work, causing the jiangxi provincial party committee of the CPC and the Jiangxi provincial committee of the Communist Youth League to be destroyed several times, forced to move from Nanchang to Jiujiang, and hundreds of party members were arrested and killed. The peasant movement activists Wang Xilao, Chen Shuigen, and Wang Laoduan of Qingyunpu Lion's Mouth were all slaughtered and sacrificed by Zhang Huizhan.
Zhang Huizhan's wife, Zhu Xinfang, went to Nanchang in the autumn of 1930, and she found two caravans to carry her, one of whom was surnamed Hong. After they arrived in Nanchang, they saw that the streets were full of corpses, and there were many heads hanging at the city gate, and one of them asked whether it was the "masterpiece" of the Nanchang garrison commander "Zhang Baye" (the old family's name for Zhang Huizhang), and they were so frightened that they were half dead, and they were busy begging "Commander Zhang" to give him a paper to "clear customs" (pass) and let him return to Changsha. This caravan with the surname Hong no longer eats the Zhang family's "shoulder meal". This shows that Zhang killed too many people, which not only attracted the hatred of the people, but also frightened his subordinates, and eventually died of "people's hearts".
That is to say, Zhang Huizhan was able to become the commander of the 18th Division, not because of his military ability, but because of his "political correctness", and in terms of his personality, he was not suitable to be a senior commander, because Zhang Huizhan had no one in his eyes and was self-conscious.
Having no one in sight and being self-conscious is a big taboo for military commanders, and this determines his fate of being annihilated by our army.
