Taoshu Memories: About Yu Pingbo

author:Grammar lessons

In my personal collection, mr. Yu Pingbo's works are really not rich, and there are only four kinds of "Selected Works of Yu Pingbo" (Hong Kong Literary Research Society Edition), "New Interpretation of the Red Chamber - Reading < Dream of the Red Chamber> Essays" (Shaanxi Normal University Edition), "Winter Night" (Zhejiang Literary and Art Edition) and "Zhou Zuoren Yu Pingbo Correspondence Collection" (Shanghai Translation). Although there are not many books, it is not difficult to get a glimpse of Mr. Yu Pingbo's miscellaneous style and everyone's style. As the editors of the Selected Works of Yu Pingbo commented in their "Preface": "It cannot be denied that Yu Pingbo's fame and achievements in the modern literary world are inferior to those of Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren, and Zhu Ziqing, but this does not affect his position in the literary world."

Although the knowledge of Mr. Yu Pingbo began as an expert in "red studies", the earliest purchase was his collection of poems called "Winter Night". I remember that it was New Year's Day in 2003, and I was looking for books at the Xiamen 21st Century Handian Bookstore, which was located on the third floor of the Guomao Building, and finally bought this copy of "Winter Night" reprinted in the name of "Chinese New Poetry Classic" at a 30% discount. What I remember is that at that time, I also bought Mr. Xin Di's "Palm Collection" (Zhejiang Literary and Art Edition), which is also a "classic of Chinese new poetry". In retrospect, the reason why the "Palm Collection" was included in the pocket was obviously related to the fact that he had a relationship with the poet Xin Di in college and asked him to sign his name.

The second type of "appropriation" of Mr. Yu Pingbo's works is his "New Interpretation of the Red Chamber- Reading <> Essay on the Dream of the Red Chamber", a book devoted to the study of "Red Studies". This was also the first time I had purchased Mr. Yu Pingbo's work online, and I had to go back to October 25, 2005, thirteen years ago. As we all know, Mr. Yu Pingbo is a representative of the "Red Studies" and is called the "New Red School" together with Hu Shi, and his important work "The Dream of the Red Chamber" (renamed "The Study of the Dream of the Red Chamber" when it was republished) was even more famous in the "Great Criticism of Red Studies" movement in 1954. "New Interpretation of the Red Chamber - Reading <The > Essay on the Dream of the Red Chamber" is another important "Red Study" work of Mr. Yu Pingbo after "The Study of the Dream of the Red Chamber", and it is also the book of "Red Studies" that I have read most seriously and carefully.

On November 6, 2011, coinciding with the weekend, I was shopping alone near Zhongshan Road, and inadvertently turned to the xiamen Xiaofeng Bookstore that was about to close, stopped for a long time, and finally "won" a Hong Kong edition of "Yu Pingbo Anthology" for 12 yuan. Such a thin "Yu Pingbo Anthology", as a "Chinese Modern Literature Anthology Series", includes Mr. Yu Pingbo's poems, essays and novels, including some of his research articles, such as "On the Existence of the Seventy Ancient Texts of the Water Margin" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Mao's Father and Son", which shows that Mr. Yu Pingbo not only specializes in "Dream of the Red Chamber", but also has considerable academic research and achievements in other classical Chinese literary masterpieces. In addition, it is also worth saying that the "Yu Pingbo Anthology" only includes a small novel entitled "Gardener", which can be seen that it is not known for its novels, no wonder the editor has "As for the novel, only "The Gardener" is a full number, and it is a good idea to talk about it, because Yu Shi is not a novelist in the end".

At the end of March 2017, a chance made me have a strong interest in the academic exchanges between Zhou Zuoren and Yu Pingbo, and I happened to have a "Zhou Zuoren Yu Pingbo Correspondence Collection" on the Internet and purchased it. It can be said that this is a very beautiful and very interesting book. The book contains a total of 391 letters between Zhou Zuoren and Yu Pingbo from March 1921 to August 1964, including 210 letters from Zhou Zuoren and 181 letters from Yu Pingbo, spanning more than 40 years, including journals, compositions, current affairs, interesting facts, characters, works, etc., which is of great historical and research value. Zhou Zuoren was 15 years older than Yu Pingbo, so Yu Pingbo often referred to Zhou Zuoren as "Master Of Qi" and "Zhitang Master" in his correspondence, and called himself "Student Pingbo", and Zhou Zuoren was also called "Brother Pingbo" in his letters, which showed that his contacts were very close and he could be regarded as a confidant. It is particularly worth mentioning that the original letters of Zhou Zuoren and Yu Pingbo, who are photocopied in the book, are particularly eye-catching inside and out. As his descendants Zhou Fengyi and Yu Runmin commented in May 1997 in Beijing's "Preface to the True > of the < Zhou Zuoren Yu Pingbo": "The letterhead used by the two men in correspondence has many famous works, which are very exquisite, and many of the seals used in the letters are precious and rare."
