He fought in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969.

After returning home from the Vietnam War, Groom became a reporter for the Washington Star, a newspaper that was more influential in the Sar.D.C. than political and social news reports.

Resigning from the newspaper at the age of 32 to become a full-time writer, his first novel, Better Times Than These, was published in 1978. Tell the war story of a group of patriotic Vietnam War American troops.

His second novel, As Summers Die (1980), received good recognition.

He often lives with his wife and daughter in Alabama or Long Island, New York. In November 2011, Groom brought with him his latest book, A History of the American West: 1846-1847, about the adventures and moving years of the American West.

In 1985, he moved back to Alabama, where he wrote a book that would later become popular around the world, Forrest Gump. When it was published in 1986, it did not make Grum a best-selling novelist until 1994, when the novel was adapted by Robert Zemeckis into a film of the same name, with Tom Hanks as the protagonist, and the film of the same name won six awards, including the 1995 Academy Award for Best Picture, the Academy Award for Best Actor, and the Academy Award for Best Director. The film propelled the novel's bestseller status.

Since 1978, he has published eight works, including the critically acclaimed Vietnam War novels "Remembering Good Times" and "Lost Summer". His co-authored biography, Talking to the Enemy, was nominated for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize.
