Elaphodus cephalophus is also called the green chamois, a family of even-hoofed deer. It has a horseshoe-shaped black crown hair on the top of its head, resembling a crown hat, hence the name. The woolly deer inhabit evergreen broad-leaved forests, mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests and shrublands in alpine or hilly areas. Timid, hidden in the understory bushes or dense forests during the day, out of the morning and dusk to forage for food, often alone or in pairs, hearing and smell is more developed, like to eat plant leaves, buds, flowers, fruits and seeds, as well as ferns, fungi.
The hairy-crowned deer is a key protected animal at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province, and is listed in the vulnerable (VU) level of the "Red List of Biodiversity of China - Vertebrate Volume".
