Becoming an Artist: Learn to Draw Some Sharing

There is always a need to explain everything to an adult.

- Antoine de · Saint-Exupéry· The Little Prince

Do you remember why the protagonist in "The Little Prince" rejected the "brilliant career of an artist"? That's right - the adults don't understand and appreciate his python both outwardly and inwardly.

If you draw a python that devours an elephant and turns out to be a hat, then this article is for you. We invited several experts – professional artists and designers – to answer the following questions:

  • Why are some people born to draw and others not?
  • Why do you need to draw?
  • Is it possible to learn this?
  • If so, how?

Interesting? Welcome to watch!

Painting – Talent or Skill?

Becoming an Artist: Learn to Draw Some Sharing

Expert opinion:

Why do some people draw and others don't? It's like asking why some people are blonde and others are brunette. Because some things are given to us by nature, but some are not. You can learn, you can hone your skills, improve your skills, be persistent, but that's not the same. Initially, the ability to draw was more of a gift......

In December 1911, Germany Impressionist painter Lovis Corinth suffered a stroke · Lovis Corinth. The right side of the artist's body is paralyzed. For a while, he even stopped painting - he forgot how to paint.

Modern scientists' explanation for this "metamorphosis" is that the ability to draw is directly dependent on the functioning of the brain.

In 2010, Re·becca Chamberlain of University College London and her colleagues decided to find out why some people draw from birth and others don't.

It turns out that people who can't draw don't see things like artists. They look at an object and misestimate its size, shape, and color. That's why they can't accurately transfer visible objects to paper.

In addition, artistic talent depends on memory. People who do not know how to draw, for example, cannot remember the angles between the lines and therefore cannot embody them in the painting.

Expert opinion:

In my opinion, everyone can draw from a young age. But some people are less talented. Some people just fall in love with drawing, while others don't. Those who fell in love with painting would later become artists. Of course, the premise is that they are diligent, persevering, and do not let the troubles of life drown out their love of creation.

Justin · Ostrovsky of the City University of New York at Brooklyn College and his colleagues held roughly the same view as the London scientists, arguing that artists had a more developed visual perception and were better able to determine which elements should be painted and which could be omitted.

Expert opinion:

In fact, this is not a simple question. Because there is also a question hidden: what does it mean to be able to draw? This is the main cause of controversy and disagreement. For perfectionists, being able to draw means being able to write extremely realistic images, no different from photography. Such a person is difficult to learn because this skill requires a lot of time and effort. It can take more than a year to train and hone skills, but a person will still be dissatisfied with themselves and will not believe that they can draw. And, over time, many people forget the meaning of the word "learning" when teaching the body.

Adults think that learning is about reading books and remembering information. Realistic painting is a practical skill, first of all, it requires the development of the eye. It doesn't happen overnight. At first it didn't look much like it, it was weak, it was bad. Many people have a hard time coping with disappointment in the initial stages. They give up and say to themselves, "This still doesn't work" or "I don't think I have the ability." But all in vain.

Practice has shown that in painting, quantity is necessarily transformed into quality. In addition, there are people who are less objective and have a stronger imagination. They have lower requirements for the authenticity of the image, and more importantly, it is more important to convey the state, feelings, and emotions. Such people learn more easily, and they see their progress from the first work (of course, it depends a lot on the teacher, on whether he can make the students notice the merits of their work). Finally they paint. They can also be critical of their skills and think they can't draw or don't know enough. But this does not prevent them from engaging in creative work, but in the process of creative work and learning. As I said, quantity translates into quality.

Surprisingly, long before the above study, artist (and psychologist) Kimon Nicolaides believed that the main problem with people thinking they couldn't paint was that they were looking at the wrong things. According to the artist, the ability to draw is not a gift, but a skill. 5 skills, to be exact:

  • limbic vision;
  • spatial vision;
  • Relational Vision;
  • the vision of shadows and light;
  • A holistic view.

《自然的绘画方式》(The Natural Way to Draw)一书中描述了培养这些技能的练习。

There is only one sure way to learn to draw – the natural way. It has nothing to do with aesthetics or technology. It is directly related to the accuracy and precision of observation, and I mean physical contact with a wide variety of objects through the five senses.

Kimon · Nikoladis

Proponents of right-brain painting also believe that the "secret" lies in the brain. But the reason some people can't paint is because they (mistakenly) use the left hemisphere of the brain, the rational hemisphere, in the process of making art.

The right-brain painting method was developed by art teacher Dr. Betty · Edwards in the late 70s of the 20th century. Her book, The Artist Within You (1979), became a bestseller, was translated into dozens of languages, and was reprinted several times.

Edwards' ideas formed the scientific research of neuropsychologist, professor of psychobiology, and Nobel laureate Roger · Sperry.

Dr. Sperry studied the division of functions in the cerebral hemispheres. According to his theory, the left brain employs an analytical and linguistic thinking model and is responsible for language, mathematical calculations, and algorithms. On the contrary, the right brain is "creative", thinking in a pictorial way, responsible for perceiving the color, size, and perspective comparison of objects. Dr. Edwards refers to these traits as "L-mode" and "P-pattern."

Most people are left-sided in information processing. 90% of people who think they can't draw still "use" their left brain in the process of artistic creation, instead of turning on the "P mode" to perceive the overall visual image.

Expert opinion:

There's no one who doesn't draw. Some environments – parents, teachers, society – can create "failure" situations. A person just starts to have an excessively negative view of himself. There is no doubt that gifted people, others also had the opportunity to paint, but this desire was denied. The people who came to my class dreamed of drawing for years, but the fear was too great. In class, the atmosphere became lively.

To understand how it works, imagine you want to draw a chair. You say to yourself, "I'm going to draw a chair." The left brain immediately translates the word "chair" into symbols (sticks, squares). As a result, instead of chairs, you draw geometric shapes, and according to your left brain, these geometric shapes are chairs.

Therefore, the essence of the right hemisphere painting method is to temporarily suppress the work of the left hemisphere.

Therefore, science considers drawing ability to be a skill that anyone can master.

Expert opinion:

The educational system of our world is organized in such a way that it encourages the development of logical thinking and pays little attention to the creative development of individual intuition. For example, I have the skills of classical painting. In college classes, it took us 16-20 hours to paint a piece so that everything was perfect and classical. Later, I studied at the Higher School of Design in United Kingdom, where my world changed dramatically. The group of people I was with were those who picked up a pencil for the first time and they did it better than me. At first I didn't understand: how could this be?! I'm a designer, and I spend a lot of time in drawing classes, when my classmates were studying math, physics, philosophy, etc. But sometimes their work is more interesting than mine. It wasn't until my first semester at Encyclopædia Britannica that I realized that anyone can draw! The most important thing is to want it, pick up a pencil or paintbrush.

Why should you learn to draw?

Iya Zorina is an editor of excellent articles who told me about her personal experience with painting. She started using sketchbooks and "allowed herself to create". As a result, Iya writes:

Now I totally understand why it's worth continuing and why everyone should try it.

Why is it worth drawing?

Drawing can develop cognitive function

Drawing can improve perception, visual memory, and fine motor skills. It helps to look at things more deeply and study things holistically.

Painting helps to see the world from a new perspective, and you will start to love nature, people, and animals even more. You'll start appreciating everything more! The process of painting itself evokes incredibly pleasurable emotions. A person's spirit is enriched, transcends the self, develops and reveals his hidden abilities. Painting is a necessity for happiness and brings peace, kindness, and beauty.

Painting is a form of self-expression

Painting, a person shows his personal potential. Painting is a dialogue between the inner "me" and the world.

Expert opinion:

Everyone draws something of their own. Some people find peace and relaxation in the process, and some find excitement and a sense of humor. For third parties, that's what life is all about. I am now researching art therapy for children and adults. It is safe to say that painting helps to solve many psychological problems: improving self-esteem, removing tension in relationships (family or work), relieving fear, etc. For example, there is a mandala method – drawing a circle (also known as a healing circle). I checked myself out – it worked! Painting is an unconscious process, it is always connected to your "me", to your potential, which everyone is born with. My advice is: draw as much as you can, draw more, learn new aspects of life, and be creative every day!

Painting boosts self-esteem

When drawing, a person will have more confidence in themselves. Fear of showing your work and being misunderstood is inevitable. Every artist goes through this process. But over time, "immunity" to unfair criticism develops.

I draw just because I like it. Someone paints to sell something (here you can use the general equivalent to express the response to "Why?"). The answer to this question). But this feeling of joy is immeasurable and measurable. I somehow asked this question on my website, and one of the answers was woven into my soul: "I paint for pleasure." "Obviously, everyone has their own joys. Some people are happy when they dance, and some people are happy when they rush down the mountain while skiing. Someone is happy when they draw. But the joy of the process comes when the results come out, but if you learn, it doesn't happen right away. However, if you overcome the difficulties, then the wings will grow. I wouldn't say it's forever, there are failures and disappointments. But the joy of what happened was worth the effort.

Many people liken painting to meditation. Making art allows you to relax and get into a state of flow. The artists noted that when they painted, they "turned off" contact with the outside world and that there was no room in their minds for everyday thoughts.

Expert opinion:

Painting is self-expression, an alternative reality. Words are hard to describe this feeling. Everyone who comes to me has their own story. Sometimes it's tragedy, sometimes it's joy, but most importantly – they find the strength to move forward. Oddly enough, the hardest part is not learning how to draw, but getting started, getting out of your comfort zone.

Drawing is a pleasure

This is one of the most exciting activities. When a white leaf "brings a city or forest to life", you will feel real joy.

Expert opinion:

Painting is a pleasure. It's self-expression. It's a burst of emotion and calming nerves. Sometimes, you walk along the streets, the light is so beautiful, the lilacs are in full bloom, and the houses are so beautifully lined up...... You'll think, "Oh, just sit here and paint these beautiful scenery now!" "It immediately made me feel good......

How to learn to draw?

We asked the experts, can I learn to draw? They replied in unison, "Yes!" ”

You can remember all the artists once they learned their careers. No great artist is not like this at the age of 5 or 10, everyone has to learn.

You can learn to draw at any age, the key is to have the will, or in the words of Fréj· Kirakosyan, "love to draw".

It's desire. There are a lot of tools and methods out there. Of course you have to learn! And most importantly – desire and perseverance.

So, everyone can learn to draw. But how to learn?

Alexandra · Merezhnikova advises learning from professionals, but she notes that with constant practice, self-study is also possible.

The general advice is simple. To learn to sew, you need to sew; To learn to drive – you need to drive; To learn to cook – you need to cook. It's the same with drawing: to learn to draw, you need to draw. It's best to follow the teacher, who can show something, make suggestions, praise – that's important! But you can do it yourself. If we talk about self-study, recommend the book "The Art of Drawing" by Bert · Dodson, who offers a fairly complete and flexible approach. But of course, everything is personal, and for some people his methods may not be suitable. Now with enough options, you can find something that appeals to you personally.

Sophia Charina · suggests drawing inspiration from nature. If you remember Rebecca's · Rebecca Chamberlain research, this seems very true.

For beginners, it is very important to live with nature. Another teacher is essential who will point the way in the right direction. Otherwise, the process will be longer and there will be errors. The work done from the picture is useless. In fact, it is very important that two-dimensional carriers (photographs, pictures) do not fully reflect the shape of the object. In fact, humans don't feel it.

Ekaterina Kukushkina gives the following advice based on her own experience:

Start writing in a notebook and draw at least one picture a day.

In this way, one's attention and imagination are developed. Every day he is looking for new objects to sketch or invent his own, thus enriching his hands and forming a creative worldview.

Took a couple of group painting classes - the atmosphere there was amazing.

In your free time, you can visit the exhibition.

Check out the painting information on the Internet. Find artists, illustrators, and designers who are spiritually close to you.

Learn about the works of famous artists.

But there is no need to repeat someone else's words! Always remember that you are unique and that your style and handwriting are you! A person who boldly expresses his style will always stand out.

In addition, Catherine suggested trying to use different techniques for painting.

Try out as many different drawing techniques as you can (watercolor, gouache, applied painting, ink, pencil, plasticine, collage, etc.). It is better to draw the simplest things: fruits, cutlery, interior objects, etc. After trying several techniques, you can choose the one you like the most and start using it.
