Recently, the bidding results of the T2 terminal project of the reconstruction and expansion project of Kunming Changshui International Airport have been officially announced, marking that the Kunming Airport expansion project has entered the stage of full implementation.

The new T2 terminal of the Kunming Changshui International Airport reconstruction and expansion project has a construction area of 730,000 square meters, with a width of about 882 meters from east to west and a depth of about 978 meters from north to south. The northeast and northwest corridors are zigzag, 310 meters long and 34 meters wide; The southeast and southwest corridors are Y-shaped, with a length of 580 meters on one side and a width of 65 meters (at the end), containing functions such as departure, arrival and transit for domestic and international passengers.

The S2 Satellite Hall Reserved Project is located on the north side of the existing apron of the S1 Satellite Hall and the south side of the T2 Terminal, with a construction area of about 10,500 square meters in the construction of underground civil structure engineering and installation of reserved embedded projects.

The airside MRT and baggage access project is located between the S2 satellite hall and the T2 terminal, with a construction length of about 838.92m and a cross-sectional design of a three-cabin or two-cabin rectangular structure. The ancillary works of the section include A, B, C and S2 satellite hall MRT stations, with a construction area of about 3,649 square meters.

The project is divided into two sections, the first is the T2 terminal project (north section) and the second bid section is: T2 terminal project (south section).

On August 18, 2023, the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the People's Government of Yunnan Province jointly approved the preliminary design and budget estimate of the terminal area and the supporting project of the north working area of the reconstruction and expansion project of Kunming Changshui International Airport. Previously, on April 23, 2023, the preliminary design and budget estimate of the flight area project of the Kunming Changshui International Airport reconstruction and expansion project were approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

The current phase of the reconstruction and expansion project of Kunming Airport will build a new 4,000-meter-long and 45-meter-wide East Second Runway and the corresponding taxiway system on the east side of the existing East First Runway; A new 4,000-meter-long, 45-meter-wide West Third Runway and the corresponding taxiway system will be built on the west side of the existing West 1st Runway; A new 730,000-square-meter T2 terminal with 189 stands, an 80,000-square-meter integrated transportation center (GTC), a 309,000-square-meter parking building, a freight station, various production auxiliary and living service facilities, as well as air traffic control, fuel supply, public facilities, etc.

The total estimated budget of the airport project is 66.5 billion yuan, and the project is expected to be completed in 2030. At that time, Kunming Airport will achieve the annual passenger throughput of 95 million passengers, cargo and mail throughput of 395,000 tons, and the design target of 633,000 take-off and landing flights.

02. A transportation hub that "fits the terrain".

The airside layout has been further optimized to provide up to 12 convertible slots and 8 combination slots. A centralized transfer center is set up in the center of gravity of the main building, the remote stand and the MRT terminal building, which greatly shortens the transit time of passengers.

Adopting the functional layout of "shortening the walking distance of passengers as the core, combining the two-station MRT and the fast passenger trail system", the MRT in the building adopts a two-station tram system, which greatly simplifies the operation of the MRT system, is conducive to passenger identification and staging, and combines the fast passenger trail system on the substratum to effectively optimize the passenger walking experience.

04. "Green and energy-saving" ecological airport

Combined with the climatic conditions of Kunming in all seasons, we will build an energy-saving and efficient ecological airport. Based on computer simulations, the use of air conditioning in the transitional season is minimized through the ingenious combination of architectural modeling and natural ventilation. Diffuse reflection of soft sunlight provides abundant natural light to more than 60% of the building's space and serves as a guide for travelers. The landside garage adopts an open design to create a zero-energy ecological garage.

The green roofs and green pedestals of the multi-storey garage form an excellent place for visitors to rest and enjoy the scenery.
