On May 11, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed that the retail sales of the passenger car market in April 2024 were 1.532 million units, down 5.7% year-on-year and 9.4% month-on-month. Among them, the retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles were 674,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 28.3% and a month-on-month decrease of 5.7%, and the domestic retail penetration rate of new energy vehicles reached 43.7%, a year-on-year increase of 11.7%.
Judging from the retail sales list of new energy manufacturers in April, the top 10 car companies on the sales list are BYD, Geely Automobile, Changan Automobile, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Tesla China, GAC Aion, Li Auto, Sailis Automobile, Chery Automobile, and Great Wall Motor. In the list, the year-on-year increase in April was particularly obvious, with a year-on-year increase of 725.7%, while the three car companies, including SAIC-GM-Wuling, Tesla China, and GAC Aion, all experienced varying degrees of decline.
Specifically, the most obvious year-on-year decline in April was GAC Aion, which fell 36.3% year-on-year to 26,109 units, extending the time to the previous April, which also saw a double-digit decline, down 23.6% year-on-year to 91,121 units, with a market share of 3.7%.
Tesla's sales in China in April were 31,421 units, down 21.4% year-on-year, of which 26,356 Model Y units, accounting for 83.88% of total sales, and Model 3 units were 5,065 units.
On April 21, Tesla's official website in China showed that the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X models were sold at reduced prices. Among them, the Model 3 is sold at 231,900 yuan, the Model Y is sold at 290,900 yuan, the Model S is sold at 684,900 yuan, and the Model X is sold at 724,900 yuan. Judging from the sales data, the price reduction failed to bring sales growth to Tesla China.
Tesla's cumulative sales in China from January to April this year were 163841 units, down 7.6% year-on-year. Industry insiders believe that in the context of Tesla's sales in China, the full self-driving system FSD may become the key to turning the situation around.
SAIC-GM-Wuling's sales in April were 32,003 units, down 5.6% year-on-year; Cumulative sales in the first four months of this year were 137084 units, up 22.8% year-on-year. Since March 2023, SAIC-GM-Wuling has indeed seen a significant increase in sales after the launch of Wuling Binguo, but it is obviously difficult to fully support the growth of SAIC-GM-Wuling by relying only on the two models of Wuling Binguo and Hongguang MINIEV.
Judging from the entire list, whether it is the monthly list in April or the cumulative sales in the first four months of 2024, BYD is firmly at the top of the list. According to the data, BYD's sales in April increased by 31.1% year-on-year to 254131 units, and the cumulative sales in the first four months were 840137 units, a year-on-year increase of 19.6%, with a market share of 34.3%. As the leader of domestic new energy vehicle companies, BYD will achieve a sales target of 3.6 million units within the year.
However, from the perspective of growth momentum, BYD's growth is far inferior to that of Cialis Automobile, which increased by 725.7% year-on-year to 25,075 vehicles in April, ranking eighth on the list; The cumulative sales from January to April were 107522 units, a year-on-year increase of 626.2%. Of course, the growth of sales of Celis cars is inseparable from the core brand - AITO. According to official data, 25,086 new cars were delivered in April.
Up to now, AITO's models on sale include M5, M7, and M9, among them, the new M5 was launched on April 23, with a total of 3 models, including 249,800 for the extended range Max version (rear drive), 269,800 for the pure electric Max version (rear drive), and 279,800 for the extended range Max RS version (four-wheel drive). Compared with the old model, the top price of the new car extended range version has been reduced by 20,000 yuan. As the first mass-produced model of AITO, the price of the new M5 is the same as the starting price of the new M7, both starting at 249,800 yuan, but the size of the new M7 is larger, although it belongs to the same brand, but the new M5 is equivalent to grabbing the market with the new M7, which will also affect the market performance of the new M7.
Li Auto ranked seventh on the list, one ahead of Celis Automobile, with sales of 25,787 units in April, a year-on-year increase of only 0.4%; Cumulative sales in the first four months were 106187 units, up 35.7% year-on-year. Li Auto is the only brand on the list in the "Wei Xiaoli" camp. According to the data, NIO delivered 15,620 vehicles in April, a year-on-year increase of 134.6%; Xpeng delivered 9,393 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 32.69%.
On April 22, Li Auto officially announced that its L7, L8, L9 and MEGA models will be reduced in price, of which the L series will be reduced by 1.8-20,000 yuan, and the MEGA will be reduced by 30,000 yuan, and cash feedback will be provided to owners who have mentioned the 2024 ideal L7, ideal L8, ideal L9 and ideal MEGA. Whether the price reduction can boost the sales of Li Auto will soon have an answer.
In addition to the above-mentioned car companies, Chery Automobile sold 22,640 vehicles in April, a year-on-year increase of 173.4%, second only to Celis Automobile, ranking ninth on the list. In addition, Geely Automobile, Changan Automobile, and Great Wall Motors also had good gains, among them, Geely Automobile and Changan Automobile ranked second and third on the list respectively, with sales of 49,155 and 40,507 respectively, a year-on-year increase of 76.3% and 119.0% respectively. Great Wall Motor increased by 48.2% year-on-year to 20,352 units, ranking last on the list.
According to the data of the China Passenger Car Association, the retail share of mainstream independent brand new energy vehicles in April was 64%, a year-on-year increase of 2.0%, and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles was 66.8%; The share of joint venture brand NEVs was 4.3%, down 0.8% y/y, and the penetration rate of NEVs was only 7.5%. It is true that mainstream independent brands have achieved counterattacks on the new energy vehicle track, while joint venture brands are still trying to survive in the field of new energy vehicles. It is worth mentioning that this year is a key year for new energy vehicle companies to gain a firm foothold, and the competition is destined to be very fierce.
