According to Li Wei, deputy director of the Municipal Aquatic Technology Promotion Station, it takes about 18 months for crab seedlings to grow from larvae to buckle crabs (juvenile crabs) and then transform into adult crabs.

According to the development needs of the hairy crab industry, in 2022, the Kunshan Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, and Bacheng Town will work together to select and breed new varieties of river crabs suitable for local breeding through various forms. This year, 7 different breeding families have landed in the Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Industry Research Institute base and carried out the breeding and breeding of crab breeding, and it is expected that the preliminary breeding will be completed in 2026.
In recent years, Kunshan has successively introduced new river crab products such as "Yangtze River No. 1", "Yangtze River No. 2", "Jianghai 21", "Shenjiang No. 1" and "Yangcheng Lake No. 1" to Kunshan, and achieved good demonstration results. In the future, Kunshan will further focus on the "seven innovations" of variety, technology, standards, sales, brand, culture and business format, launch the characteristic brand of hairy crabs in Yangcheng Lake, and promote the high-quality development of Kunshan's river crab industry.
